Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

images (7)November is Alzheimer’s Awareness month and is a very in-depth illness that affects many people around the world. This illness is a progressive, degenerative disorder causing the brain cells to waste away and in time die.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, which is a continuous decline in thinking, behavior, and social skills that disturb a person’s ability to function images (11)independently and contributes to 60-70% of all the cases. The numbers of those affected by Alzheimer’s are staggering. 5.5 million people of all ages, 5.3 million being 65 and older battle with this illness. Sadly, 200,000 individuals that are younger than 65 years old, deal with early onset Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s effects women more than it does men, being two-thirds of people battling with Alzheimer’s are women.

There are 7 stages of Alzheimer’s disease that I am going to explain, just to give you a better understanding of this illness and what the individual and their families go Alzheimers-Stages_Sect3through.

  1. Stage 1 does not involve any impairment. There are no symptoms of dementia or memory loss during this stage.
  2. Stage 2 involves a very mild decline. Minor memory loss can be detected at this stage, which can cause the individual to misplace things. The memory loss can’t be easily distinguished between typical age-related memory loss and memory loss due to Alzheimer’s. At this point the individual can still do fairly well on memory tests.
  3. Stage 3 consists of a mild decline in cognitive issues. Not only are changes in cognitive functions noticed by physician, but memory tests are affected more so. The difficulties at this stage include: finding the right words during a conversation, organizing and planning, remembering names of new acquaintances and or frequently losing personal possessions.IMG_4333
  4. Stage 4 shows a moderate decline and clear-cut symptoms are apparent. The difficulties during the stage include problems with simple arithmetic, poor short-term memory such as remembering what they had for lunch, irritability to manage finances to pay bills and forgetting details about their own life.alzheimers-disease-infographic
  5. Stage 5 begins to show a moderately severe decline in cognitive functions. Even though the individual can normally still function independently, they may start needing assistance with daily activities. The challenges may include difficulty dressing appropriately and or an inability to remember details about themselves such as their address and phone number. The person usually still knows family members and some personal history details. Although memory continues to be an issue, long-term memory such as childhood and youth is less of an issue.
  6. Stage 6 is at a point of severe decline and person needs constant supervision. The obstacles at this stage include confusion or unawareness of surroundings, unable to recognize faces, but can recall closest friends and family, loss of bladder and bowel control, major personality changes and behavior problems, require assistance with activities of daily living like toileting and bathing. At this stage wandering may become an issue, requiring one-on-one supervision.Fotolia_94382271_Subscription_Monthly_M
  7. Stage 7 is the final stage and the most severe decline occurs. There are a few complications involved with stage that include lose ability to communication or respond, the person has no insight to their condition, may utter only words or phrases, assistance with daily activities is needed and unfortunately death imminent.

When dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, there are various symptoms a person may experience. Of course each person will experience this illness in different ways, time lines and severities. Now, please allow me to explain the symptoms and what can be expected regarding the memory, thinking and reasoning, judgment and decision making, planning and performing tasks and personality and behavior changes.

10_ways_to_love_your_brain_infographicMemory is one of the key symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. It is completely normal to experience memory loss, like forgetting where you left your keys, but memory associated with this disease persists and worsens which affects functions at work and home. Early on a person finds it difficult to remember recent events or conversations. There are a few things one with Alzheimer’s disease may do that are in regards to the functions of memory:

  • Repeat statements or questions
  • Forget conversations, appointments and events
  • Misplace personal items and put them in illogical places
  • Get lost in familiar places
  • Struggle to find the words to identify objects, express thoughts and or participate in conversations
  • In time, forget the names of family and friends1114808.large

The ability of thinking and reasoning becomes challenging. Other things that may become difficult are:

  • Concentrating and thinking
  • Multitasking
  • Managing finances, balancing a checkbook and paying bills
  • Inability to recognize numbers, even their own phone number

Good judgement and decision making becomes even more difficult. This includes, but not limited to the following:

  • Ability to make a logical decision
  • Poor choices with social interactions
  • May wear inappropriate clothing

images (7)Planning and performing familiar tasks become hard to complete. As the disease progresses, routine tasks requiring things to be done in a sequential manner, such planning and cooking a meal, will become difficult. In time people with Alzheimer’s disease may forget how to perform normal daily tasks like bathing and getting dressed and in turn need a caretaker.5798b8071eb46.image

Personality and behavior changes are very common because the changes in the brain can and do affect mood and behavior. Other issues a person may deal with associated with this are:

  • Depression
  • Apathy
  • Social withdrawal
  • Distrust in others
  • Mood swings
  • Wandering
  • Irritability and aggressiveness
  • Loss of inhibitions
  • Loss of empathy
  • Delusion

The causes related to Alzheimer’s disease are not completely understood yet. However, scientists believe the cause is a combination of genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors that over time affect the brain. It is understood there are problems with brain proteins that fail to function normally and disrupt the work of brain cells.

Unfortunately, there is not one single test used to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Doctors will look at the signs and symptoms present, view medical history and rule out any other conditions before they conclude on a diagnosis.

alzheimer-disease-assessment-scale-cognitive-subscale-adas-cog-11-item-lA cognitive test will be completed with the physician. On a cognitive assessment all of the following must be present and severe enough to affect daily life:

  • Gradual memory loss and progressive cognitive impairment
  • Questions that are asked during cognitive are:
    • What is your age?
    • What time is it?
    • What is the year?
    • What is your date of birth?
    • What is the name of the town you are in?
    • Can you recognize 2 people in the room?
    • Name the president
    • Count backwards from 20 to 1

Genetic testing may be appropriate to confirm diagnosis. A gene known as the APOE-04 is associated with higher chances of people over age 65 developing Alzheimer’s.alz-696x464

Currently there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s and the death of brain cells can’t be reversed. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, it is important to follow a daily routine. It may also be helpful to be involved with activities and day-care programs and also have involvement with support groups and services.

While there are no diseases modifying drugs available, but there are some options that may reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. Choline Sterase inhibitors are alzheimer-disease-16-638approved for symptomatic relief. The medications are called Donepezil (Aricept), Rivastigmine (Exelon) and Tacrina (Cognex).

There is a lot of help available for the person with Alzheimer’s and their families. You can call 24/7 a hotline 800-272-3900. There is also online help available and a ACRC-Helplibrary of information available at https://www.alz.org/help-support/resources/virtual_library.

Motivational Monday!

6dd4fb5264d72b598fa2e12899fc773aHappy Monday y’all! I hope you had a delightful weekend and you are looking forward to the week ahead. I was finally able to make decision that I do consider to be life altering,  I turned in my resignation! Not having a job is a little stressful, but at the same time I feel a huge load off my back and mind. I know I am going to find something better soon.images (2)

Are y’all ready for a short week? With Thanksgiving being this week, that is one less day of work and one more day to show what we are thankful for. What are y’all thankful for? I am thankful for the life I am able to live and the loved ones I hold dear. Even though I have a rather small family, I am thankful for each and everyone of them. There are some that are unfortunately not still with us, but they are all thought of daily! Y’all already know just how much I loved ❤ my Poppy, but that man will live on in my heart and soul! ❤

It took my a while to decide on what quote I wanted to share with y’all today. I have so many that have a lot of meaning, but the one I decided on was very powerful to me❤!never let the world change your smile

I do believe there is so much in this world that can bring a smile to our face, but then there is also so much that tries taking that happiness away from us. We can’t allow that to happen! There seems to be so much going on in the political world that just will never make sense to me. I believe in fairness and justice, but that doesn’t seem to take place with politics.smile

I know this is a little off topic of Motivational Monday, but I think it is extremely important to say! In my eyes, I think we can all make a huge difference in someone else’s life. It doesn’t really take much to show compassion and empathy for others, at least I don’t think so! It might just mean a smile or kind words that can make an enormous difference in another’s life. We never know what anyone is going through because we do not live in their shoes.

Thank you for stopping by my site today! I do always appreciate your continued support and kindness! I hope your week starts off great and only gets better for you. Of course, I also hope you are feeling the best you possibly can. Please never forget that I am always sending y’all LOTS of love ❤, comfort, and many positive vibes!

Final decision made!

1_69WNS6pE9eB__UC5yOr5egThe decision I finally made today took a lot of thought. For some very strange reason, turning in my resignation to my job was a rather difficult thing for me to do. In the past I have always given the proper two weeks notice, but why should I do what is proper when they never did for me? Does this make me just as shallow as those I worked for are or did I just do what was best for my health? Who can really say what is right and wrong? The truth is, everyone has a breaking point when they just can’t take it anymore and in this situation we need to put ourselves ahead of anything else, especially a job! No job is worth it when you are constantly being mistreated and stressed. Music helps my stress in so many ways!

Try Amazon Music Unlimited Free Trial

At this point I feel a sense of relief mixed with worry. Of course I have had several good decision madeinterviews and feel pretty confident one of them will work out, but then I think what if I don’t? I am 38 years old and haven’t ever left a job when another wasn’t a sure thing, but for the first time in my life I decided to put my health first!

I do know and completely understand that things in Corporate America are never 100% fair, but at the same time if everyone is being mistreated in the same way, I can deal much better with it. I know that didn’t sound very nice, but being treated equally is important! I am pretty sure my next job will come with the same issues, but my goodness it can;t ever be as terrible as where I have been at. I should have known something was not right made deicisionwhen I started at the apartment community when everyone that had worked there before left. I highly doubt it was because of new management and way more likely because of the current management! I should have followed what my instincts were telling me! A valuable lesson was learned!

There is a part of me that will miss some parts of the job I just left, but nothing big enough for me to stay there. There are a handful of residents I will miss and I kind of regret not being able to say bye to them. I do not think it will have an impact on their life and yet I do wish them wellness!closed chapter

The funny thing is, I am glad to be closing this chapter of my life and look forward to the next chapter. I am playing the waiting game to hear back from another opportunity, which I am terrible at, but I will be fine! Change isn’t always easy, but it is a necessary thing as well!

Thank you so much for stopping by my site today. I always appreciate your thoughts on what I have shared and do encourage them! I promise to respond to your comments as quickly as I can. I do hope your weekend has been wonderful and you are feeling well. Please never forget that I am always sending y’all LOTS of love ❤, comfort, and many positive vibes!

MS & Temperatures are difficult!

imagesIt is a nasty, rainy 🌧 and chilly day out today and I have no plans at all to leave the house! This kind of weather makes me feel pretty awful and honestly hurts too much to walk around. It is rather frustrating, but I guess we all deal with life’s obstacles the best we can. I do wish I could sent this rain to Australia where I know they are dealing with some struggles at the moment.

Heat and high humidity can make Multiple Sclerosis symptoms worsen, even though it is only temporary, it feels like an eternity. Doctors believe that this is due to heat causing nerves, whose myelin cover was already destroyed by MS, toacupuncture-for-multiple-sclerosis-755x429 conduct electrical signals far less efficiently. Doctors have told me for years that hot baths and hot showers are terrible for me, but there are times this is the only thing that relieves some of my pain. Even though a hot bath is only a short-term relief, it is at least a half hour of comfort!

Crazy thing is, I have been told more times than I could count that cold temperature are actually good for me, but is this the truth? I do not think so! Extreme cold temperatures and season how-cold-affects-symptoms-of-multiple-sclerosis-2440834-6eb83234820b49a991e4f07ab6f872a1changes can also worsen MS symptoms. If I understand all of this correctly, hot temperatures can causes MS issues and so can the cold, so I am not sure where that really leaves us.

What to do to ease MS Symptoms:

  1. Avoid ALL extreme temperatures
  2. Avoid exercising on hot and humid days
  3. Utilize the beauty of the air conditioners and cooling vests. Home a/c’s may actually be tax deductible for some people with MS. I think it is definitely worth a chat with doctors! The link I shared regarding cooling vests is just one option, the MS Society has more and you might be able to get it for free!

Even though climate can worsen MS symptoms, climate changes do not create any additional nerve damage.

5 Tips for staying warm during the winter months:

  1. Try to get moving! Of course there are times when living with MS it isn’t as easy to move around the way you would like. However, on day it is easier to get up and moving, attempt to get some moderate physical activity in. This will actually help cold-feet-and-multiple-sclerosis-2440826_v2-1a595343ecfd4dbdaee165a88eab7c40you burn energy and moving around can keep you warm.
  2. Dress in layer. It is rather easy to remove clothing if you get too hot, so dressing in layers might help. When you know ahead of time it is going to be extremely cold, it will be wise to wear a hat, thick socksand or lined boots. Wearing a hat and thick socks will keep the heat from escaping through the head and feet.
  3. Keep your hands and feet warm. Doctors think that MS can cause the blood vessels in the hands and feet to overreact to cold temperatures. Those with MS may also be at risk for Raynaud’s phenomenon, which is a condition where your fingers and toes lose heat.Raynaud’s Phenomenon can not only cause the color of hands and feet to be white to blue, but also cause numbness, pain and or the feeling of pins and needles. In effort to protect the hands and feet, you could use hand warmers and a heating pad. The warming vest I shared is just an option and I am sure there are many others out there!
  4. Warm your insides. A few easy ways to heat your insides is eating a hot meal, hot soups and hot drinks, such as coffee, teas and hot chocolate.
  5. Get some sunshine! Go outside and soak up the sun 🌅! Even on a chilly day the sun will still work to heat you up. By getting outside in the sun 🌅, you are also gaining some much needed natural Vitamin D.thumb_to-danc-terties-msnubutterflies-multiple-sclerosis-blog-page-47269722

Thank y’all for visiting my site today. I hope where you living is bright and sunny 🌅 with NO chance of rain 🌧! If you have the time I do look forward to reading your comments. I promise I will respond as quickly as I can. I hope you are feeling well and your weekend has started off great! Let It Go Friday!

welcome fridayHello y’all and HAPPY FRIDAY! How has your week been? I certainly hope your week has been great, you are feeling well, and you are looking forward to the weekend.I spent my week either searching job a new job, going on interviews and torturing myself with deciding if I should turn in my resignation into the the boss (jackass). Considering I have been extremely miserable in my current job, I do not have a clue why it has been so hard for me to type up my resignation letter and how I will turn it in to the boss (jackass). I have finally managed to get welcome-weekend-please-stay-as-long-as-you-like-1my resignation letter typed up, but still have yet, but at least it has been typed which was a good first step.

I am so glad the weekend is here and I do not really have anything that has to be done. As crazy as this will sound, I am glad to have the weekend to clean my house. I finally have the time to do a complete clean of the house and not miss a single thing! I am hoping that between cleaning the house and laundry, I will be able to give my sanity a break with this job issue and rest my brain.

Of course I love the quote I am sharing with y’all today because it couldn’t be more true. I am hoping you will enjoy this as much as I do and I can’t wait to read your thoughts!b56a6c743d7157cdb1bec91fc1d6a87b--take-ownership-quotes-fun-quotes

I do believe whether it be good or bad, we should always take responsibility for our actions. Some of our actions could result in something unpleasant and result in difficulta95738fb473dbf38072051114f6e1565 times, which of course is not easy to deal with. I think we can’t grow and become better if it weren’t for mistakes. However, our actions can result in positivity. What do you think?

I wanted to let y’all know that there are several posts I am working on at the moment. I might have gotten a little OCD about them changed things multiple times because I want these posts to be great and helpful. I wasn’t going to give any further information just so you kind of know what to expect, but I couldn’t wait to share with y’all what has been in the works and that I hope to have them completed by Monday, but we will see!

Ways to hunt for a job!

1_2NArbYb4bKnnacnGKphY8gWhether you are searching for a new job because you are miserable with your current job or you want to explore new jobs opportunities that sound interesting, it still isn’t easy. It can get very overwhelming and downright stressful, so you want to take things slowly and not rush yourself. I suggest making a list of the jobs and companies you have interest in. I find it easier when I have a check list because it keeps everything organized and makes it easier to remember which positions you applied for. In this post I am going to share a few strategies for searching for a new job that might be helpful for you!

  1. Online job search:online-jobs-serach-portal-1

This will allow you to search on your own time and in the comfort of your home. Typing keywords or positions into your search engine provides you with positions that fall within the area you desire. The most common job search websites are: Indeed, ZipRecruiter, LinkendIn and Glassdoor. It is very important to have an updated resume to submit and a cover letter that is directed to the position you are applying for.

  1. Network & Referrals:

BusinessReferralNetworkNashvilleMissionWordleThere are times when a company chooses to not post some positions, but instead asks their current employees for referrals. I honestly do not know why companies try this, but my guess would be it is because they trust their current employees and current employees know the personality type that would blend well with the company. At the same time, this could be a little unfair to applicants because they may be new to the area or they do not many people. This is just my personal opinion, but it kind of proves that in corporate America it isn’t what you know, it’s who you know. Candidates that might be may get turned down, even though they are very knowledgeable just because they do not know the right people and that is aggrieving.

   3. Job Fairs:Job-Fair

Many companies partake in job fairs to find the best prospective employees. When a company has plans to attend a job fair, they will advertise the event locally to reach as many job seekers as they can. When going to a job fair make sure you have your most current resume with you and a cover letter customized to the position/positions you are applying for.

To stand out even more than other applicants, you could create your own business cards. How-to-Make-Your-Business-Card-Stand-OutThe important information you should include on your business cards are:

  • Full legal name
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • LinkedIn site information

Other important information you should know when attending a job fair is:

  • Wear your “Power Outfit” that not only shows professionalism, but will add to your confidence.
  • Create a list of questions to ask the recruiter. Preparing your list of questions will show how deep your interests are for the position. When the recruiter or hiring manager sees that you took the time to write down you list of questions, it will increase your chances of being remembered over the other applicants. as-group-4@2x
  • Practice your personal pitch several times prior to the job fair. This is your time to show your excellent communication skills and personality. It is important to make eye contact with the individual you meet with.
  • ALWAYS send a thank you email to those you spoke with the same day. FOLLOW UP with the people you spoke with at the job fair three days after the event as well. This is an easy, direct, and personable email that can make a huge difference with getting an offer!

  4. Company’s Website:

download-5.jpgTake the time to make a list of companies you are interested in working for. Once you have completed your list of potential employers, visit the company’s website and search for open positions that only show on the company website. You can utilize the company’s website to identify contacts that might be beneficial to your needs. You might be able to find contacts that are in the same department as the position you want to apply for. Once you have useful names, email addresses, or phone numbers try to connect with these individuals.

 5. Social Media Channels:Should-I-be-on-social-media-as-a-healthcare-professional_singlecontent_homepage

LinkedIn has become the social media site for professionals. LinkedIn can be used to connect with people all around the world that work for companies you wish to work for or just in the same type of work you are interested in.

Most companies also use this site to post available job openings. Individuals with experience may receive recruitment because a recruiter saw their resume and thinks they might be a good fit for a position available.

helpful-tips-picture-id933100878IMPORTANT TIPS when using social media platforms to find a job:

  • Always use your real name
  • Use only professional images
  • Audit your accounts and remove any posts that may be viewed as inappropriate or unprofessional
  • Delete profiles on websites you are no longer using
  • Brand yourself and be consistent on all platforms
  • Include who you are, what you do, and what your career plans on for the future

Finding your dream job or at least a job you will enjoy can be very challenging and dream jobextremely frustrating. At the same time it is important to stay persistent and positive. I say this because it is easy to get discouraged when you are not getting the responses you want. You might need to get a little creative with the search and use a variety of ways. For instances, you could use an online search engines with networking and the company’s website for the perfect combination. You could actually combine all of the strategies I shared together and it might work for you.

Thank you for stopping by my site today! I hope you found this post useful and it will help you if you are searching for a job. I have been on several interviews and it is exhausting, but it takes effort for change to happen. I do look forward to reading your thoughts on this and if you have any other ways to search for a new job. Pick Me Up Thursday!

132811-It-s-Almost-FridayHappy Friday Eve y’all! I hope you have had a great week and you are feeling well! I have taken this week to focus on taking the proper steps to get away from the toxic environment I have been working in. I have gone on several interviews and still have a few more in the next few days. When we are unhappy with something in our life, whether it be a job, relationship, or lifestyle, we are the only ones that can change that! Instead of just settling for something, we need to get out there and make a change that could help us be happier and more fulfilled. shine and smile

We all know that life can be very challenging. What we go through with an illness can be very draining, but it is important we know that we are strong enough to get through anything. There is an amazing fellow blogger I want to introduce you to, Emma Ortega Negrete. Emma has written some pretty amazing books and I want to share them with you! I have already read both of them and know you will enjoy them as well!

We have almost made it through another week and the weekend is near! Do y’all have any plans for the weekend? The only thing I have planned is to meet up with my mother on Friday for lunch! Considering I am not working right now, (well I haven’t actually quit my job yet, but that is coming soon) I am able to do things I normally can’t because of crazy schedules. The quote I am sharing with y’all today, I hope you will find it as a pick me up to get through the final day of this long week!onesbestsuccess-min

look on the bright sideThank you so much for visiting my site today! I know we are all busy with life, but I do hope you will take a few moments to check out Emma’s books, I know you will not be disappointed. Emma is very encouraging, real, honest, and a breath of fresh air! I hope you have a great day and really hope you are feeling as great as you possibly can. Happy SundayHappy Sunday y’all! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend and you are feeling well. I am really sorry that I have been a little MIA for the past few days, but I have been dealing with decisions that I am terrified I will make the wrong choice.

I think it is already perfectly clear how I feel about my job and manager. It is extremely difficult for me to sit by silently when I see people being treated like  third-class citizen that doesn’t deserve kindness and compassion. Of course my manager has found him an assistant manager that thinks the nasty treatment is acceptable and is almost worse than he is! Y’all know I currently work for an apartment community, which I had done frustration-level-to-maximum-conceptual-meter-d-rendering-87596475.jpgpreviously for years. I was a good manager and excellent with leasing and taking care of my residents. I NEVER once treated the residents in a demeaning manner, but always tried to understand what was going wrong with their lives. I have even gone as far to say to my heartless manager if it were not for the residents we would NOT have a job! But yet he still acts the same way!

On Wednesday night I was dealing with some horrible pain and unpleasant feelings in images (7)my legs and feet making it impossible for me to sleep. I know my body and knew it would not be possible to be at work and walk around, so I called out sick on Thursday. The manager decided to make things even more stressful for me requiring a doctor’s note to prove myself. He even went as far to say in a text message, “I hope you enjoy your day.” I mean seriously, I called out due to pain and NO sleep and this idiot had the nerve to tell me to “ENJOY” my day! I believe there is a point when being treated unfairly makes a person break. Well I hit that point on Thursday!

First of all he knew when he hired me that I had Multiple Sclerosis and knew some days would be worst than others. It isn’t like I was hiding my illness from him, in fact I was confusedvery upfront with him! So what gives him the right to treat me as if I do not have a chronic illness?? I complied with the requests to provide doctor’s notes that I am NOT able to work more than 5 days in a row and yet he still had the nerve to ask me why I was scheduled off on the Friday before I worked the weekend! If I had worked that Friday, I would have been working 8 days in a row without a break, which is NOT ONLY ILLEGAL, but against my doctor’s orders! Why ask for doctor’s notes if he wasn’t planning to honor them?

At this point I have a doctor’s note keeping me out of work until Wednesday. Honestly, I debateam debating with myself if I am going to go back! I have one interview already and another one on Tuesday that seem promising. Are these jobs what I want to do for work? Probably not my first choice, but they both would be a hell of a lot better that where I am at now! I have gone back and forth with myself all weekend if I am just going to walk into the office at some point next week and tell him to take his job and poor treatment up his ass! Or I could go in on Wednesday to negative treatment and guilt trips! It should not be a difficult decision to make, but quitting like this isn’t who I am!

The other issue that is huge with this place is I have not been given my bonus for 2 months, which is SO WRONG! This so called man treats my co-worker like he is God! This co-worker doesn’t get anywhere near the amount of leases I do and most residents think he is rude! He is late to work every day, takes longer lunches and leaves early, but somehow still gets 80 hours. Hmm, how do you think that happens? So my question is what does this co-worker have that I don’t? frustration

I know this decision seems cut and dry, but I am still struggling with it! I know that if I quit suddenly, I will find another job because I am determined and I also do not do well not having a job. At the same time, I do feel like I deserve a short break to get my body feeling better. I have been suffering with pain and frustration for way too long! So, what do I do now? In my heart I know my health needs to come first and leaving this toxic environment would be good for my mental stability.
