Let It Go Friday!

Let the weekend beginCongratulations, we finally made it to the end of the week! How was your week? I do hope you had a wonderful week and you are feeling happiness for the weekend ahead of us. It doesn’t matter if you have BIG plans or nothing more than sleeping in and relaxing all weekend, it will be amazing! Now that we are officially at the end of a very grueling week, it is time to LET GO of any negative emotions that we may have felt during the week. Unfortunately, y’all already let go 25about the nasty migraine/headache I had early in the week, but there are other raw emotions I experienced during the week and I am very ready to let go them go because they are only causing a lot of pain! The quote I am  speaks volumes to me and I do hope it will resonates with y’all as well! As we let go of the negative in our lives, we are allowing room for more happiness and positivity into our lives. I know we all want for our lives to be full of much more joyful and splendid days, rather than hardships and pain. Pick Me Up Thursday

Unfortunately, I had to miss work on Tuesday due the nastiest migraine/ headache I have ever experienced in my life. This was a type of pain I would not wish on anyone, even someone that is not the kindest of people in the world! It started while I was still at work and only continued to get worse. Thankfully, it did get better by Wednesday, but I still had a manageable headache. If I must have a headache I would definitely prefer the more manageable type!

Personally, I think the quote I am sharing with y’all today holds so much truth and it can be easy to forget. Motivational Monday

5afdae460fa899918ce4403eaf11d0ffHappy Monday y’all! I hope you had a lovely weekend and you are ready to start this off with a positive mind! Mornings are never easy, but Monday mornings become a rude awakening that we are in for another work week. It isn’t really the work part that that make it difficult for me, it is the extremely early morning wake up. Over this past weekend I decided to take a complete and total rest day, which was Saturday. I tend to think Saturday is the best rest day because it allowed me the rest I needed after a long week. I think many use Sunday as a day of rest, but that never seems to fit for me. Did y’all do anything fun this past weekend? I hope whatever you did brought you the joy you deserve.

I hope this will offer you the motivation you need to start your week off great! I think viewing life like riding a bicycle is pretty fantastic. Do you remember when you learned to ride a bicycle? I do remember and it did not matter how many times I fell, I did not give up. I remember being outside all day and did not stop until I was riding my bicycle! Life is very similar because no matter how many times things go all wrong, I keep getting myself back up to try again and I know y’all do as well! Last week may not have been the best and it might have come with many difficulties, but this is a new week and the lessons we learned last week will make everything better for this week! The important thing is, we NEVER give up and always keep TRYING until we get things RIGHT

I know I shared a little about how trying last week was for me and I do hope this week will not be anywhere near as challenging. There are a few things about me that I just images (2)can’t change, no matter how much I want to. One of those things is my heartbreaks when I see others going through hard times. When I know someone is struggling it makes me want to help and definitely let them know they are not alone. It is common and normal for someone to be going through a hardship that makes them feel lonely because they do not know when it is time to ask for help or even how to do so.

I know this week will be another of the damn impeachment trial that keeps taking over ahqdefault (1) show I have been watching for most of my life. I know my stupid TV show is not anywhere near as important as what is going on in my country, but I am so SICK AND TIRED of it all! It enrages me when people that are in power think they are above the law. Thyroid Awareness Month

fullsizeoutput_2ae6January is Thyroid Awareness Month and I wanted to take a moment to share what this means and what thyroid disease entails. I also want to make y’all are fully aware that I am not a medical professional and this post is only meant to raise awareness of thyroid disease through the research I have done. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits low on the front of your neck and has many functions I never really knew about, but I am going to share them with you.

Approximately 20 million Americans suffer from a thyroid disorder and millions more worldwide. A couple common issues include thyroid nodules and enlarged thyroid glands, which can have cancer within them. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolic rate, heart rate, blood pressure, thyroid affectstemperature, heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development, mood, and bone maintenance. I am going to tell you what hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism means.

Hypothyroidism is a condition when the body does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This condition affects 1-2% of people worldwide, but women are affected ten times more than men. Some common signs and symptoms include fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, itchy and dry skin, weight gain, muscle weakness, puffy face, hoarseness, hair loss, depression, trouble concentrating and memory problems.

B8r-2xJCYAAfqOgThere are several ways a doctor can use to diagnose hypothyroidism. First, they are going to want to know about the following:

  • The general state of health and any changes that have been noticed.
  • Family medical history and if anyone in the family has been diagnosed with thyroid disease.
  • Your doctor will want to know if you have had any thyroid surgery or radiation to the neck because of cancer.
  • Your doctor will want to know any medications you are currently taking because some medications can trigger thyroid complications.

Second, you will need a physical examination searching for any signs of hypothyroidism including:

  • Evidence of dry skinThyroidAwarenessMonth
  • Swelling around the eyes and swelling in the legs
  • Slower reflexes
  • Slower heart rate

Third, your doctor will perform blood tests.

  • TSH stands for Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone. This test measures the amount of Thyroxine (T4) the thyroid is being signaled to make. Abnormally high levels can indicate hypothyroidism.
  • Free T4 test is used to find out how well your thyroid gland is working. This test can be used to test for hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

90% of primary Hypothyroidism disease is caused by Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, which is a disease when the immune system, attacks the thyroid. Other causes of Hypothyroidism are iodine deficiency, genetic disorder, certain medications and surgery that removed part of the thyroid.

Thyroid_Awareness_month There are foods that should be avoided or at least consumed in moderation if diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. Foods to avoid are all types of millet, highly processed foods, supplements containing too much selenium and iodine. The foods and beverages that should be consumed in moderation are soy-based foods, broccoli, kale, spinach, cabbage, peaches, pears, strawberries, and coffee, green tea, and alcohol because they can irritate your thyroid gland.

Hyperthyroidism, which is referred to as an overactive thyroid, is when the thyroid ogi12881gland produces too much of the thyroxine hormone. Hyperthyroidism can cause anxiety, nervousness, rapid heart rate, unexpected weight loss, and high blood pressure.

 Two causes of hyperthyroidism are Grave’s disease and toxic nodular goiter. Grave’s disease is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the thyroid causing it to make more thyroid hormone than the body needs. Toxic Nodular Goiter is a thyroid gland containing autonomously functioning thyroid nodules. Both of these issues can be treated with medications, radioactive iodine or thyroidectomy, which is the removal of all or part of the thyroid gland.

There are foods that should be avoided and foods that are encouraged to eat with hyperthyroidism. The foods to be avoided in excessive amounts are:

  • Iodized salt
  • Fish and Shellfish
  • Egg yolks
  • Dairy products
  • Iodine supplements
  • Foods that contain red dye

 

The foods that are encouraged to eat are:

  • Non-iodized salt
  • Coffee or tea, without milk, Dairy or soy-based creamers
  • Egg whites
  • Fresh or canned fruits
  • Homemade bread or bread without salt, dairy and, eggsthyroid-awareness-month
  • Popcorn with non-iodized salt
  • Oats

 It is always very important to prepare and plan ahead with all doctor’s appointments. Most people will start out with their family physician but will end up being referred to a specialist. When dealing with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, your referral will be with an endocrinologist that specializes in the body’s hormone-secreting glands.

 We only have a short amount of time with a specialist and need to make the most of that tips-for-communicating-well-with-your-doctor-1time. The following will help you prepare for your appointment and stay on track.

  1. When you are scheduling your appointment, ask if there is anything you need to do in advance to prepare. For instance, are there any restrictions on you for the appointment?
  2. Write down any and all symptoms you are experiencing. It does not matter how small they seem or how irrelevant you think they are, the doctor may think differently and it may help with options.
  3. Write down important personal information to share with your doctor. It may not seem important because they are things you are used to dealing with, but sharing any stressors or life changes may be more important than we think.
  4. Making a list of any medications you are currently taking, including vitamins and supplements to share with your doctor will be helpful for you and your doctor. This will be especially helpful if anything you are taking could cause your thyroid to become irritated.
  5. Having a family member or close friend come to appointments with you can have many benefits. The person that comes along with you can help you remember important things to discuss with your doctor and remember details of the appointment later on. Moral support is also very beneficial.download
  6. Before an appointment, we all think of many questions we want to be sure we ask the doctor, but once in the exam room, it is easy to forget the questions. Writing a list of questions and or concerns you want to discuss will keep you on point and not forget any of those important questions you had prior to the appointment.

 I am going to share a few basic ideas for questions to ask a physician during an appointment. Again, these are just ideas and you might have many others that concern you more.

  • What’s the most likely cause of my symptoms?
  • What tests do I need?
  • What treatment options do you recommend?
  • Are there generic alternatives to the medication/medications you are prescribing?
  • Do you have brochures I can take home to read? What websites would you recommend?

You should always expect your doctor to have questions for you during an appointment as well. Some very common questions a doctor may ask are:

  • When did you begin having these symptoms?thyroid3
  • Are the symptoms you have continuous or occasional?
  • How severe have these symptoms been? On a scale of 1-10?
  • Does anything improve or worsen the symptoms you are dealing with?

  The most common symptom for Hypothyroidism is an unexpected weight gain. The additional weight gain is typically due to an excess of salt and water. Depending on the severity of Hypothyroidism, weight gain can be between 5 and 10 pounds. To help combat weight gain there are a few tips that can assist you in maintaining a healthy weight.

  1. Rest is vital! Getting any less than 7-8 hours of sleep nightly can contribute to weight gain, especially around the mid-section.
  2. HypothyroidismAndWeightGainMindful eating is important. This means you need to pay close attention to what you are eating, why you are eating, and how fast you eat.
  3. Practicing yoga and or meditation can help you to de-stress, which in turn can improve your overall health.
  4. A low to moderate carb diet can be helpful, but at the same time, too few carbs may lower your thyroid hormones. It might take time, but it is important to find the perfect balance.

 I know this post has been rather long and I will be wrapping it up soon, but I do want to quickly share treatment options for both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism with y’all. When treating an overactive thyroid, hypothyroidism, you can use oral medication levothyroxine. Levothyroxine works to restore adequate hormone levels and even sms-surgeons-tretment-for-thyroid-diseasereverse the symptoms involved. The use of radioactive iodine can be used when treating hyperthyroidism. Radioactive iodine is taken orally and absorbed by the thyroid gland causing the gland to shrink. This can cause the thyroid activity to slow enough to change its status from overactive to under-active making it possible to need daily medication to replace the thyroxine.

happy fridayIt is finally time to say HAPPY Friday y’all! I hope you had a good week and you are just delighted for the weekend! Do y’all have any plans or are you going to just play it by ear? Sometimes I think having plans for a weekend can be like a double edged sword because no matter which way it points, you might still feel obligated to do something, when you really just want to sit back and relax!

It has been a very long week for me and full of things I allowed to get me all stressed out. Logically, I know that all that stress did not fix a thing and in fact it just made me feel even more terrible. Stress can cause pain and when you already live with pain, it is like a double whammy! This is the reason for the quote I am sharing today! let-it-go-quotes-17In my mind I do understand that I have not have much control over what I stress about! It is difficult for someone that wants everything planned out to deal with things I have no control over. Sometimes I think I might be a bit of a control freak and isn’t it funny that I have an illness I have no control over? I have had to train myself to remember that sometimes I just have to throw my hands up in the air and let whatever is meant to happen, happen! Y’all already know I believe everything happens for a reason, so why get all uptight and stressed, right?

Pick Me Up Thursday!

images (2)We made it through to another Friday Eve! I hope your week has treated you well and you are feeling the best you possibly can! It is amazing how slow the weeks go by and then how fast the weekend flies by. I guess all we can do is appreciate each and every minute of the weekend and not take it for granted. We have no control over life events and the fact tomorrow is not a guarantee should make us thankful when it comes!

The quote I decided to share with y’all as a Pick Me Up is very positive and reminded me of the strength that I do have within. Y’all have that same strength within each of you because we all experience so many challenges each day, but somehow we survive them. c0f8aeefd371b7eb452c8afaaeab0facUnfortunately, it is easy to forget how much determination and strength it takes to get through days that are full of difficult times and possible hardships because it comes to us like second nature. The other day I was talking to a nurse about the pain I deal with each day and how when people that do not know me or what I deal with judge me when they see my handicap parking tag. In the past this would upset me greatly,  but now I just feel bad for those that decide to judge without knowing the full situation because they are really creating a negative environment and missing out on building their knowledge. For my sanity and not allowing people like that to destroy myself-esteem I choose to ignore them and their nasty looks. images (2)

Motivational Monday

The alarm clock going off on Monday morning is never the most pleasant sound, but it is the start to a new week to do anything we might have missed out on last week. On another note, the weekend does seem to get shorter and shorter each week. Of course this past weekend I dealt with a massive migraine that I thought was literally trying to kill me! My guess is that my miserable migraine on Saturday evening into Sunday morning was all due to the rain we had, but I tend to always blame the rain for anything bad that happens. There was so much rain, my front yard looks like a small pond, but without the ducks! Last week, there was one day that included three season in a 24 hour period! I am not even joking it started off cold like winter is supposed to be, by noon it was more like spring and by 3:00 it was summer! In all my years I have never experienced weather that was so confused. I am starting to think that Mother Nature is going through something pretty serious and she needs help!hqdefault

Today, many companies are closed due to it is Martin Luther King Jr. day and I fully support this holiday. Unfortunately, my company is not closed so I will be at work like normal. I think this man deserves to be remembered and respected for all the sacrifices he made and the determination he held onto!

Martin Luther King Jr. did some amazing things for humanity and equality and sadly it seems too many MLK-2020people have forgotten his work. There is far too much hatred and racial injustice going on and it is 2020. I feel that we need to evolve with the times and NOT continue to devolve. In my opinion, all the American’s that have decided it is okay to discriminate against someone that isn’t white, is disrespecting the great Martin Luther King Jr. and it just isn’t right. We all need to remember the words this man spoke and the fight he was so passionate about, not just today, but everyday! There is no one person of any race, sex, religious beliefs, sexual orientation and so on that is better than another! My rant about Martin Luther King Jr. can stop now and I will carry on with my normal Motivational Monday quote, because I have a pretty amazing quote I want to share with y’all today!
