10 Types of Motivation

The different types of motivation, which one are you?

Motivation is predominantly our desire and willingness to do something. It is typically our reason or reasons to act or behave in a certain manner. This could be our acts for self-improvement, accomplishing one of our life’s goals, or complete a challenging project we have worked hard on. The motivation we have within us is what helps push us forward towards achieving the goals we set.

The more highly motivated an individual is, the more they will accomplish because they remain focused on what they want to achieve and experience. Highly motivated people pursue their thoughts and create habits that fuel their determination. It offers us guidance with decision making and setting goals to further motivate and excel to the next levels.

Everyone is motivated differently. Before I explain the different types of motivation, do you know what motivates you the most? It can be how you are motivated by setting goals for yourself or self-improvement, the sky is the limit with motivation.

The following are the 10 common types of motivation.

1. Intrinsic Motivation-

People whose motivation is driven by internal feelings and rewards are encouraged by intrinsic motivation. They are not motivated by other’s recognition or from winning awards. This form of motivation is not acting in a selfish manner but can be what guides them in selfless actions. They are pushed and encouraged by their own feelings to do what is right or what is good for the world. Many motivated in this way will go into organizations working with charities or non-profit organizations so they are able to do their part with making a difference in the world and for those that are suffering. These individuals are motivated more by helping other than the money they can make.

2. Extrinsic Motivation-

Those that are influenced by extrinsic motivation yearn for recognition from others. This type of motivation might sound selfish because they are not as clear for others to understand, but they really are not selfish people. There are a number of reasons why people do the things they do throughout their lives. Maybe working at a lower-paying non-profit organization isn’t enough to pay the bills, so even though a person loves what they are doing, they leave that company to go to work a higher paying job. Does that make them selfish? I do not think so because they only want a better and more comfortable quality of life for themselves and their family. It is likely their motivations are both internal and external.

3. Social Motivation-

Humans are naturally social creatures. We all typically have a desire to interrelate and engage with others. This type of motivation covers the common eagerness that most humans have to connect with others, have a sense of acceptance, and to belong to a group. This doesn’t need to be a large group but could be a smaller group. Some may long to connect with humanity on a deep and larger scale because they want to travel, to experience and learn about how others from different cultures live. Some people may want to become closer with family and friends in order to build happy life long memorable experiences and memories. When people belong to a group of others with similar goals and interests, it can help them achieve their goals and continue to move forward.

4. Competency Motivation-

People who are motivated by competency are enticed by processes. This encourages more to be achieved while gaining tactile comprehension and wisdom that can be utilized later. These individuals are not as interested in the finished products as they are in the processes it takes to reach their goals. People that go back to school several times are a good example of competency motivation because their interests are more in the final outcome of their gained knowledge. It also shows competency motivation when people decide to take classes to build on their knowledge from a classroom setting.

5. Expectancy Motivation-

The individuals that are guided by expectancy motivation are driven by how they expect the outcomes of their actions are going to be. Any choices that they make are determined by what the end goal is for the actions they take. They are not typically concerned with the action necessary to make it to their end goal. When management decides to link bonuses to performance, gripping their employees’ expectations of the outcome to encourage them to work harder is an example of expectancy motivation. If management violates their employees’ expectations it can be incredibly demotivating and destroy trust. Another example of expectancy motivation is exercise and weight loss. Unfortunately, if the expectations with exercise and weight loss are not met, a person can become discouraged.

6. Attitude Motivation-

Attitude motivation is similar to social motivation with the difference being that the person is not searching for a group to fit in with. A person is motivated by the ability to influence the ways others think and feel. An individual will wear a smile on their face when out in public despite what they are going through. The person is motivated to practice kindness in the world to ameliorate the attitudes and emotions of those they come into contact with. This form of motivation may help an individual inspire the people around them to spread positivity to those that are in need of it.

7. Arousal Motivation-

The theory behind arousal motivation indicates that people are compelled to carry out actions in order to maintain an optimal level of physiological arousal. Each person as a distinct arousal level that is best for them personally. When arousal levels become lower than our personal optimal level, the person will search for stimulation to increase theirs. When our levels become too high, the person will try finding ways to calm themselves.

Arousal motivation is closely linked to the Yerkes-Dodson Law, in regards to the way our performance is linked to our arousal state. This law indicates that performance increases to a point with physiological or mental arousal and when arousal levels become too high, our performance decreases.

8. Fear Motivation-

Although it might not be a positive experience at some point during our lifetime everyone has acknowledged fear as a motivator. Fear can cause us to take action to avoid or confront our fears. Fear can be a beneficial tool for one’s self, but not as much when it comes to intimidating others. Fear can help us get things accomplished while creating unnecessary enemies likely to discover ways to attack later. When using fear as a motivator it is best to confront and overcome our fears. Each fear we are able to overcome strengthens our abilities to handle challenging situations, overcome and reduce the impact of any future fears.

9. Achievement Motivation-

A theory of achievement motivation explains the desire to achieve goals for the purpose of reaching a peak of brilliance. The downside of this type of motivation is the sheer fear of failure. This person wants to be the best of the best at whatever they do. Alongside possible dark turns, people may begin looking for a short-cut, decide to cheat or engage in other unethical behaviors to obtain excellence. An example of this type of motivation is when the person studies to earn a certification or obtain a new skill by way of training.

10. Incentive Motivation-

It is human nature to desire to be rewarded for a job well done. Incentive motivation is about pursuing palpable rewards and the fulfillment provided. Incentives are a favored way to initiate habits and make personal changes by rewarding one’s self once reaching the goal we set out for.

Discovering what motivates us can be an important and beneficial tool to understand. Once we have this knowledge, there is nothing we can’t achieve. Breakthrough the Barriers of Social Distancing

92101563_1597447863745824_3525203181490511669_nIt was not that long ago when simply going to the grocery store did not involve the fear of a new and potentially deadly virus. For the past several months we have been faced with a world-wide pandemic, stay at home orders, businesses closing their doors (hopefully temporarily), job losses, widespread fear for our health, mask, and gloves for protection, social distancing, and many other issues that have caused panic. Truthfully, I can’t even remember the last day I wasn’t terrified to leave the house or when social distancing was not practiced by most people and then getting frustrated when some do not respect the social distancing.

I feel confident saying that while I do understand the reasons behind social distancing, it Screen-Shot-2020-04-01-at-2.23.33-PMhas been very challenging and isolating. Granted, I do have my husband and two cats home with me (24/7), but let’s face it being home all the time with no changes can make anyone get irritable. I do love my husband and cats dearly, but sometimes I need a break.

I have found some ideas for activities that could help heighten our moods and encourage Boost-your-moodmotivation.

  1. Express and stay in touch-

Acts of kindness should always be something we try doing. With all everyone around the world is dealing with today a simple email or handwritten note to someone you know could offer a positive boost to their day. Think about memorable previous bosses or co-workers and send them a note. I know some previous bosses we were glad to be rid of, but I know I have at least one that I still miss and really enjoyed working with her. This person’s name is Mary Close Hall and she really was amazing! Offer to go to the grocery store or pharmacy for an elderly neighbor that struggles with getting out of the house during normal times. While in a store, either for yourself or a neighbor, thank those on the frontline and essential workers for what they are doing for the community.

  1. Stay connected digitally-Resources+2

Today’s technology has had extensive changes over the years. Millions of people around the world already rely heavily on social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The social media platforms offer positive ways to stay connected virtually, while we continue to practice social distancing. People from various locations can interact with one another face-to-face, well a better way to say it is screen-to-screen. The possibilities are endless to stay connected safely with family and friends.

  1. Discover your creativeness-

creativenessTasks that are repetitious such as knitting or crocheting can create a meditative state of mind and relaxation in the body and brain. These meditative and relaxed feelings have also been known to decrease worry and negative thoughts. You do not need to have or run out and buy needles, crochet hooks, and of yarn there are many other forms or art that can reduce anxiety and even be uplifting for our moods.

  1. Learn a new language-language-2

While we are stuck at home with very limited interaction with others, we can be getting prepared for future travels. There are numerous apps and YouTube videos to help teach us a foreign language. We can make the most of the times of isolation and be thankful for the time we had to learn something new!

  1. Become Cultured-

WHAT'S_YOUR_LIFE_EXPERIENCES_SCORE-_(2)Now is a great time to explore art institutions and cultural events virtually. Back when things were not so complicated, did you ever think of or find the time to visit a museum virtually? I know that it never crossed my mind to expand my worldly knowledge from my living room, but now we all can try this. Google is a fantastic tool that can act as our tour guide to these exciting new experiences.

  1. Passion Projects-passion-project_4x

Is there anything you have wanted to try, but never found the time to do so? Maybe you want to write a short story, or a book, or learn more about your ancestry. Now is a good time to pursue these projects you have thought about for so long. While we are stuck at home and feeling beginning to feel anxious, diving into a long-term project can offer us a sense of purpose.

  1. Attend a virtual class or event-

physicalMany local attractions and studios are becoming creative and offering options for enjoyable free and digital experiences. I am listing a few free options for you and your family to check out and hope you enjoy them!

Why create a vision board?

Vision-Board-Poster-300x223I feel confident saying you have all heard about vision boards before, but what do they mean to you? Have you made a vision board before and if so what did you include on yours? If you have had a vision board in the past or you currently have one, did you find it to be beneficial, why or why not?

Honestly, I have heard about vision boards before, but I was not 100% clear on the purpose or what should be included in it. Of course, I am always intrigued about ways to add as many positive outlooks and or tools to life as I possibly can. With all that the world as a whole is going through at the moment, I think now is a time we all need as much positivity as we can get.rsz_vision-board-example

There are numerous reasons for having a vision board. As I list the questions I was curious about, though please note they are not in any particular order. What is the purpose? What should be included on a vision board? What is needed to create one? Do they really help? Are there any benefits and if so what are they?

There are several reasons to have a vision board and yet there aren’t any rules. Your vision board is a corporeal portrayal of a goal or goals you are focused on accomplishing. It is meant to be your dedicated exhibit of what you want in life. Your vision board can bring your ambitions, desires, dreams, objective, and intentions into your existence and cd8d1c_8bed59f4db02485fa79996edbf45b08c_mv2reality.

The sky is the limit to what you can include on your vision board. Your vision board can be your goals for career, relationship, home, travel, personal growth, education, spirituality, social life, education and anything else revolving around your goals. Your vision board can include things you want to view every day and motivates you. Any quotes, pictures, sayings, and places you desire going to, people that inspire you, reminders of events, and anything that encourages you.

You should give yourself time to create your vision board, it should be fun utilizing your creativity and NEVER stressful. I have discovered a few ideas to help start a vision board that might be helpful which include:dd51b203ce6b932b0643081b965a53ec

  • Working on ways to heal from hardships
  • Explore your passions and talents
  • Learn more about who you are
  • Envision what you want from life
  • Spend time with those you admire
  • And literally anything else that comes to mind, just don’t limit yourself

To create your vision board you dream-board-ideas-01-1only need a few simple items including:

  • Posterboard, corkboard, or canvas
  • Several old magazines
  • Pictures printed from an online source
  • Scissors, tape, pins and or glue stick
  • Markers, paint and or sticker
  • Most important anything you know you will want to see daily. This is where those inspirational quotes, sayings, and people will come into play

The benefits you may get from a vision board are endless and could be different for each person. I will share a few and then you can decide how it benefits you.

Eliminate bad habits and gain good habits

replace-bad-habits-with-good-habits-400px-4We all have good and bad habits that are perpetual and emerge from our unconscious minds. It is almost as though we have some kind of control over them. However, logically do we have any control over our habits?

How would you explain what is meant regarding bad habits? Bad habits are a negative behavior in regards to our behavioral patterns. Most commonly procrastinating, spending too 7040000947_dmuch money, nail-biting, spending excessive amounts of time watching TV or on the computer are bad habits.

Have you ever wondered what caused our bad habits? According to the author, James Clear, who wrote “Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results. Atomic Habits”, stress and boredom could be the key contributors to our bad habits. It is also possible that our boredom and stress are only on the surface and the causes of our bad habits are from much deeper issues. What we may have experienced might be bad-habits-2challenging and painful to think about, but if we are truly committed to making changes; we need to face the issues head-on. To overcome our bad habits, we will need to acknowledge them first.

No matter what good or bad habits we currently have, there is a reason they are in our lives. We might never know why these habits are in our lives, but they do have a purpose and even a benefit. Most of the time, our bad habits are how we handle stress.

It isn’t easy to comprehend how our bad habits can be beneficial in our lives. However,26ad67a072eb39fd803a5ecf73a8fbf1 we need to try understanding how instead of straightforwardly eliminating them, we should attempt replacing them with good habits that provide us with comparable benefits.

Do you know any good ways to break bad habits? Personally, I have several habits that aren’t just bad, they are awful habits. Through some research, I have discovered some ways to break the bad habit cycle we deal with.

Before I dive too deep into ways to break the bad habits, I am going to explain how our habits are driven by a 3-part loop sequence, that was initiated from Mayo Oshin,

  1. Trigger is the stimulus that starts the habit
  2. Routine is doing the habit and behavior itself
  3. Reward of the benefit is associated with the behavior

ooda-loop-simpleNow we can finally dive deep into Mayo Oshin’s coherent strategies that will help us utilize psychology when recognizing our triggers for our bad habits, quit procrastinating and begin easily getting things done.

Oshin’s three strategies to break bad habits include:

  1. Use the words “I don’t” as opposed to “I can’t”, which can assist with making better choices. In two different research studies, participants that use the words “I don’t” were able to meet their goals and had positive impacts on their well-being more than those that used “I can’t”.
  2. Practice becoming aware of the triggers. The more aware we are of our triggers that lead us to lean on our bad habits, the higher the chances we have on interfering with the existence of the loop leading us towards bad habits.

msc-mindfulnessAn addiction expert, Judson Brewer, performed a study with smokers trying to quit smoking. Brewer believes that practicing mindfulness frequently can help end the bad habits. In his study, Brewer found 36% of individuals that practiced mindfulness were successful with quitting, as opposed to the 15% that did not use mindfulness and were not successful with quitting smoking.

An intriguing practice exercise you can try is the following steps! The next time you are tempted with your bad habit, take a step back, answer the following questions and log your answer if you want something 5-minute-craving-busters-2824747_FINAL-5bd0bfe046e0fb0051c82ed7to reflect on

  • Where were you when the cravings occurred?
  • What time of day does this happen?
  • What was your emotional state of mind?
  • Who were you with?
  • What happened before your cravings?

You can keep your answers in a journal, so you can refer back to them at a later time and maybe notice a trend. This is a way to practice mindfulness and also assist you in taking more control of your actions. By tracking the issues you will be that much more aware of your 1933.1549052609behavior and offer ideas to stop!

  1. Use an “if-then” plan to replace the bad habits with good habits. It isn’t enough to only have a goal to break bad habits. To perpetually continue with a good habit, we need an intentional plan.

To create an “if-then” plan we need to do the following steps.

  1. Recognize a situation that commonly triggers our bad habits
  2. Identify a distinct reaction to the trigger. Typically, this would be a good habit to 5a1ef657150000a73c85a7aareplace and prevent falling right into the temptation
  3. Combine steps 1 &2 into an “if-then” format. Utilizing an “if-then” plan creates an easier reaction for our cravings and replaces them with a good habit because of the made ready automatic response. Over time, we will be able to see how effective it can be to assist in breaking away from bad habits.

I hope you found this information beneficial in your life. There is no pressure at all, buScreen-Shot-2019-01-08-at-9.10.06-AM-300x168t what habits of yours do you think are bad habits? I will share mine with y’all. One is definitely I always think I am fat and that I need to lose weight, but my husband always tells me I am crazy and don’t need to lose weight. I will say telling someone that thinks they are fat crazy might not be the best way to approach the topic, but men often don’t think before they speak. Another habit of mine that could be viewed as bad is that I apologize for everything, even when I didn’t really do anything wrong. I don’t know why, I just immediately say “I’m sorry.” One more habit, that can be viewed as good and bad 101961is, I am way too overly emotional about everything!

Motivational Monday

Cute-motivational-Monday-quote.-Time-to-sparkle-and-shineHappy Monday y’all! I hope you spent your weekend safe, comfortable, and relaxing so that you are fully ready for whatever will happen during this upcoming week. I think many people are working from home and while kids are out of school might be a little challenging. The world as a whole are doing the best we can, while we all have many questions about all the what if’s.

I guess all we can do is keep living our lives, even if we are not leaving our homes to stayquote-challenge-doubt-overcome protected from the coronavirus. So let’s do what we always do on Monday and read what I think is  a motivating quote! Of course, I hope you will find this quote motivating and it will keep you leaning towards a positive outlook! It is my belief that staying positive in bad times is the only way to deal with life because what will becoming negative do for us? I also think that if we are negative, we will only feel worse about everything in life. Sometimes, finding the positive in any situation will give us a stronger sense of purpose and we might even be able to help someone else that is going through something much worse than we are. I guess we will never know unless we at least try!

we are in this togetherI want to thank you for visiting my site today and would love to read what you think about the quote I shared. As many of you already know I have been trying to post more frequently. After all, I am not working at the moment and the pandemic keeps me feeling relatively stressed. The reason for my stress is because all I do is worry about everyone else and fear if I leave the house I will come in contact withbutterfly someone with the coronavirus and with a weak immune system will more than likely get sick. I enjoy writing and it keeps me a little calmer. I am trying to build on my skills by writing about things I probably would not have thought about before, but it has been an amazing experience for me and I do hope you are enjoying the random things I have been writing about.

I hope your week starts off well and only gets better each day! Please never forget that I am always sending y’all LOTS of love ❤,comfort, and many positive vibes!

Finding Inner Peace

inner-peaceDo y’all know what does inner peace means? Inner peace is a state in which you are mentally and spiritually at peace, despite the potential of any stressors that might arise. When you truly have inner peace, you have fully accepted yourself and therefore, do not waste your precious time, energy, and attention on unimportant thoughts. Inner peace is the direct opposite of anxiety and worries.

There are things we can do to find our inner peace.

  1. Set your limits-set limit

By knowing when to stop, we can minimize being preoccupied with certain things that do not matter in the bigger picture of life. What this means is we can set a certain amount of time to spend on social media because that is something we do not need to spend unnecessary time on. I am sure many people will disagree with me on this, but we can live without social media, we can survive!

  1. Try to relax-

take breathExperiment with deep breathing exercises to help release your tension. Deep breathing is something that can be done anytime and anywhere. You can practice breathing in through your nose slowly, allowing your chest and belly to rise as your lungs fill with air, hold inhale for 4 seconds. Then slowly exhale through your mouth for 6 seconds.

If this doesn’t work for you, do a little research on other relaxation techniques until you find the one that works best for you.

  1. Don’t make any issue bigger than it is-

When facing an issue you think is huge, take a break and ask yourself if this situation will still matter in a few days, weeks, months, or years. Asking and answering this question will help you to keep things in perspective.

  1. Slow downslow down

Constantly being stressed and panicked can have many negative effects on your mind and overall health. Most often by simply slowing down, you will have a chance to lower the feelings of stress.

  1. Unclutter your life-

If your workspace or home is cluttered, it may keep your mind preoccupied. Personally, when my house is a mess, my thoughts remain fixated on everything I have to do. I tend to make a to-do list with everything I need to-do in order of importance. The issue with this is, I only make the to-do list in my mind and then feel keep-calm-and-be-a-minimalistoverwhelmed, which nothing gets done.

  1. Be a minimalist-

This can remove the unnecessary distractions from your life, allowing for peace of mind, clarity, and focus on a welcomed new thought process.

  1. Be prompt-

Even though being prompt might be a small and easy habit, it can be a huge help for our schedules. Maybe being 10-15 minutes early will only give you those extra minutes to relax and recharge, but you will be amazed to how much it helps our mental status. Every free minute we have in this unpredictable and stressful world is very beneficial to our body!

  1. Learn to accept and let go

We all have heard that saying, the past should stay in the past. It seems that this notionlet_go_expectations has been lost, but we need to try to bring it back into our thoughts. Nothing will ever change, no matter how much we stress or constantly think about it. It will be in everyone’s best interest to focus our attention solely on the present, never the past or even the future.

  1. Ask, don’t guess-

Most of what causes our stress is our assumptions. The truth is, no one can read minds, but too many still try which only causes too much unnecessary anxiety. Instead of assuming anything, we need to have much more open communication and ask escapequestions!

  1. Escape for a short time

What this means is to allow yourself time to recharge and even some soul searching. This isn’t quitting anything; you are just enhancing your life!

  1. Quit Procrastinating

I know not all problems can be solved quickly, but we can’t procrastinate trying to solve our problems. Honestly, the longer we wait, the more tension and stress we will feel.

  1. Disconnect from work-

Your work life should never belong in your home. Weekends and time not at work are offline-is-peace-of-mindyour time to recharge and not think about deadlines. I was never good at this when I had a job and wish I had adopted this thought process a long time ago, but I will when I do have a job again.

  1. One thing at a time-

There are times when multitasking can be a great quality. However, multitasking can also cause too much stress. The thought process of focusing on one thing at a time can be healthier for your health because it will take a lot of stress off your shoulders. Everything will still get done in time.

  1. Focus on good memories-

focus-on-a-positive-memoryWe tend to focus too much on our bad memories, instead of all the good memories we have. Maybe we do this because those bad memories caused some trauma and we will rethink what we could have done, but that isn’t going to fix anything. If we try replacing our bad memories with good ones, we will hold onto the strength we felt during the good memories. This might take time, but it will be beneficial to our mental and physical health.

  1. Meditate daily-Daily-Meditation-1-735x675

Meditating is the most common way to discover your inner peace. By meditating even for just 15 minutes a day, it will help you discover and hold onto your inner peace. A fellow blogger shares some pretty amazing meditation ideas, so I will encourage you to check out her site. Bella’s site is https://thoughtsnlifeblog.com/

positive vibesThank you for stopping by my site today. I do hope, if you haven’t already visited Bella’s site, you will do so soon. Inspiration and Motivation

what-is-the-meaning-of-inspiration-to-youHow would you explain inspiration, if someone asked you? According to Webster’s Dictionary, inspiration is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative. Have you ever been inspired by someone or something, and if so who or what inspired you?

There were to psychologists, Thrash and Elliot that did extensive research on inspiration. Inspiration-Isnt-All-That-People-Make-it-Out-to-BeThe two have concluded that inspiration can be both powerful and motivational. The two psychologists describe inspiration as being assembled of three main categories: evocation, transcendence, and approach motivation. Now we can learn and understand what each category is.

  1. Evocation-

This is inspiration occurring impulsively. You are likely to feel as though something happens to you, as opposed to something you choose or intend to experience.

  1. Transcendence-

This is an experience of something beyond typical, everyday events. You may feel admiration and connected to a considerably strong energy source. You could have a sense of conviction and lucidity about things and instantaneously become aware of new opportunities.

  1. Approach Motivation-

This inspiration may cause vigorous actions and motivate you to try something new. You may find yourself open to opportunities of achieving things you once viewed as impossible. You can alter your perception of what you are capable of.
