Living life with a chronic illness is definitely not easy. But I do my best to push through all the barriers this illness puts in front of me! In my heart and mind, I believe maintaining a positive outlook on all situations in life will carry us through to much better times! I prefer not to think of today as simply Thursday, but rather as Friday eve because it sounds better and makes me happier because I know the weekend is SO close. It has not been the best week and has been full of infuriating things which has made it challenging to not express my frustration with others in a polite manner. When I get too irritated I find I should be silent and alone so I do not say things I might regret and then have to apologize for later. Those that know me best understand what it means when I do not say anything at all about anything and tend to leave me be. The reasons I have felt this way during the week are mostly work-related but might have a lot to do with isolation and being confined to the house for WAY too long. I am sure I am not the only one that feels this way because we have all dealt with the same thing.
Now that we have almost made it through four days of this week and we have one final day to go before the weekend returns, I am sure I am not the only one that could use a little pick-me-up. Even though it can be challenging at times, I do think that happiness is a choice we can make and that it takes less energy to be positive than it does to be negative. Today comes with the good news that we are halfway to the weekend. We are so close to the weekend that you can almost see it! I cannot speak for anyone else, but I am beyond ready for this week to be over because it has been a challenging, and frustrating week. Even with that said, I am thankful to be alive and have the opportunities that I do have. I am very thankful for my loving family and our adorable three cats because they bring me so much joy. Y’all already know that I love animals more than humans, but every time humans upset me and cause stress, our three cats make it better with their love and silly behaviors!
I think we can all agree that the weeks are getting longer and can be challenging to get through, which is why I think when we are halfway through the week, we all could use a little inspiration. The pandemic has been terrifying and defeating, the hate spreading worst than wildfire, many lies being spewed daily, and so much more that it is hard to stay afloat. During devastating times, it is crucial that we try a little harder to be understanding of others and be empathic when we do not know firsthand what it is like to walk in another person’s shoes. We should not judge others in how they decide to live their life because it is how they want to live and they are entitled to do so. It is Tuesday, which is a good sign because we are getting closer to the weekend. I understand we still have four days to go, but at least it is not five! How has your week started? Yesterday was not the best day for me because work was a little frustrating and I was battling with a headache. The headache was one that I can tolerate, but that does not mean it was easy especially being forced to stare at a computer screen for eight LONG hours!
Unfortunately, there is still way too much negativity and hate throughout the world, and I think we all need more peace and thoughtfulness. Would it not be a better world if only we could all get along and treat one another with respect? There is more we can accomplish if we can support each other and utilize the knowledge we gain from our life experiences. I am hopeful that with all the tragedies we have seen take place in this world, we will become even stronger and more resilient. I am one that strongly believes in being kind to others, even when they may have a nasty attitude because we never know what someone else is going through in their life.

We are welcoming Monday back, again. How was your weekend? I think the weekends are getting much shorter because it feels like it was just Friday yesterday. I guess all we can do is tackle this week with strength and determination! Each day needs to be viewed as an opportunity and not a nuisance. I want to believe this week is going to be better than last week and be filled with happiness! The good thing is, we can decide to be optimistic and not negative. Both negativity and optimism are contagious, so let’s spread it as much as we can!

I was at a store over the weekend and on the way there I was feeling rather down. Since 2001, the ACPA declared the month of September as Pain Awareness Month. Considering pain is something I have lived with for many years, I thought it would be a good time to explain more in-depth what I go through daily and raise awareness for others suffering from it. Pain is something you can learn to deal with, but it does not mean that it gets any easier. For myself, the pain has become part of me, and I thought it was best to embrace it because it seems like it is never going to go away completely, and I do not think dwelling on things we do not have control over is a healthy way to live. Even though some days are worst than others and some parts of the days are more intense, I refuse to allow the pain to dictate my life. Throughout this post, I am going to explain the different types of pain there are the causes of these types of pain, and ways to discover relief.
Acute pain comes on suddenly due to something specific, such as surgery, broken bones, dental work, burns or cuts, labor, and childbirth. Typically, this pain lasts between 3 and 6 months. Acute pain tends to be a sharp, throbbing, burning, stabbing, tingling, weakness, and numbness pain.
There are several ways acute pain can be treated including resting the part of the body in pain, apply heat or cold to the area, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen, physical therapy, massage, and relaxation practices that can help with acute pain.
Chronic pain is continuous and long-standing pain that lingers past the typical recovery time or is accompanying by a chronic health condition. This pain normally lasts longer than six months, which sometimes may be on strongly, then off with no pain felt, or incessant. This pain can affect people to the point they are unable to work, eat properly, partake in physical activity, or enjoy life. The areas of pain can include the back, joints, mouth and face, muscles and bones, or neck. The pain might feel like pins and needles through the body.
Approximately, 25% of people suffering from chronic pain will go on to another condition, referred to as chronic pain syndrome (CPS). When people end up enduring CPS, their symptoms are more than just pain and may experience other issues, like depression and anxiety that interferes with their daily life. Treatments for chronic pain include nerve medications, acupuncture, stress management, and relaxation techniques, electrical stimulation, cognitive behavioral therapy, and massages. Personally, with the pain I deal with daily, stress management would be very useful because stress only intensifies the pain.
Neuropathic pain is commonly felt as shooting, burning, stabbing, tingling, numbness, and the pins and needles sensation. The pain can be felt in the feet or hands and can extend into the legs and arms.
The common causes of this pain include nerve pressure or nerve damage after surgery or trauma, viral infections, cancer, vascular malformation, alcoholism, neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, and metabolic conditions like diabetes. The ultimate goals for treating neuropathic pain are to treat the underlying disease, provide pain relief, and improve the quality of life. There are some common medications used to help this pain that includes anti-seizure drugs such as Gabapentin, Pregabalin, Topiramate, Carbamazepine, and Lamotrigine. There are also topical treatments available such as lidocaine or capsaicin.
Nociceptive pain is caused by damage to body tissue. This can occur when there is something that caused harm to the body, such as chemicals, hot or cold temperatures, or physical force. Nociceptors can sense physical damage to the skin, muscles, bones, or connective tissues in the body. This type of pain can feel sharp, aching, or throbbing.
A few common causes of nociceptive pain include bruises, burns, cuts, fractures or broken bones, pain created by repetitive or muscle overuse, and joint damage. There are also several conditions that can cause this pain such as alcoholism, diabetes, HIV or AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, and joint problems in the spine.
The treatments for this pain include physical therapy to assist in strengthening and stretching affecting the muscles and joints, over-the-counter medications (OTC) such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, hot and cold therapy, and surgery.
Radicular pain is a form of pain the radiates from the back and hip into the legs through the spin The leg pain can also include numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness. The pain that radiates down the back of the legs into the foot is known as radiculopathy or sciatica. The pain can be deep and consistent but might worsen with certain activities like sitting or walking.
There is various cause for spinal compression that can lead to radicular pain, which includes herniated disc, foraminal stenosis, diabetes, nerve foot injuries, and scar tissue from spinal surgery. Treating this pain involves treating the underlying condition or discovering the best-suited combination of pain management strategies. A few non-surgical treatments include physical therapy and epidural injections.
Pain is not easy to deal with and if you are experiencing pain, please know you are not alone. One in five Americans suffers from pain issues in the United States. Pain can be isolating and make us feel alone and misunderstood, but there is help for everyone. Of course, I have had Multiple Sclerosis for twenty years, but I have not experienced pain the entire 20 years. Yes, during the last fifteen years the pain has been increasing steadily, but I will never surrender to the pain, and I will defeat it someday.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, people were doing what they normally do, such as going to work and school, and were not in fear of a terrorist act that would take the lives of almost 3,000 people and injure 25,000. I think it is safe to say that most people, especially those living in the United States can remember this day twenty years ago. The events that took place were life-altering, chilling, and heart-wrenching, and were unnecessary. For some reason, what took place today two decades ago does not make sense to me but fills my mind with many questions that I know I will never have the answers to.
Considering this day continues sending chills down my spine, I think it is crucial to remember the events and cherish our lives. For each time frame of the events, I am going to share with you, I can remember exactly where I was, what I was doing, and what took place over for days, weeks, months, and years afterward. Do not worry, I will not go too in-depth, but will share just the key points.
In Boston, MA at Logan International Airport, American Airlines flight 11 departed 14 minutes late at 7:59 AM with 81 passengers and 11 crew members with their destination being Los Angeles International Airport. Sadly, at 8:46 AM, this airplane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. When the news interrupted the radio station I was listening to with this tragic news, I thought there must have been a mistake, or I did not hear what was said correctly because all I could think was how could a plane crash into a building.
Another flight, American Airlines flight 175 departed 14 minutes late at 8:14 AM from the Logan International Airport in Boston, MA with a destination of Los Angeles International Airport. This flight had 56 passengers and 9 crew members on board, which crashed at 9:03 AM into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
As the news had not yet registered into the minds of people around the world, the terrifying news did not end and there was further devastating news to come. A third plane, American Airlines flight 77 that had 56 passengers and 6 crew members departed 10 minutes late from Washington Dulles International Airport and bound for Los Angeles International Airport. This plane crashed into the Western side of the Pentagon at 9:37 AM.
Unfortunately, most people are extremely worried about the lives of their families and trying to call them, but the cell towers were in overdrive and calls were not able to connect. This only created mass chaos because no one knew if there was going to be another plane crashing into another building and where it might happen. Large cities around the country were on alert, which considering at that time I was living in a large city with tall buildings I was panicking.
A fourth plane, United Airlines flight 93 that had 37 passengers and 7 crew members on board departed 42 minutes late from Newark International Airport, now called Newark Liberty Airport bound for San Francisco International Airport. It was later determined that the passengers on this flight had learned what happened at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and were trying to overpower the hijackers on board. Due to a fight in the cockpit, this flight crashed at 10:03 AM Southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset Pennsylvania. It is not known where this plane’s target was, but it is believed the target was either the White House or the United States Capitol building.
There are many reasons the events of this day do not make sense to me. The United States has one of the strongest militaries in the world. The United States has fighter jets that can reach Mach 6.72 or 4,520 mph, which is more than five times the speed of sound. The reason the fighter jets were not scrambled to defeat these terrorist acts was disturbing because they were taking part in Exercise Vigilant Guardian. Why is it on the day the country is under attack, the fighter jets are doing an exercise and unable to intercept and put an end to this attack?
On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attack on the United States, we need to remember the almost 3,000 people that lost their lives and the 25,000 people that suffered injuries. The people that were on the scene after these devastating events took place put their lives in danger to try to save the lives of others, which I do believe is heroic. We should also remember that people lost loved ones during this time, and some are still battling the effects of this 20 years later.

Happy Friday y’all and let us welcome the weekend back again! How did your week go? I do not think I will ever understand how a short week always feels so much LONGER! Logically, most would think that a week with four days would be shorter and easier, but that is never the case. I am sure everyone agrees with me and is SO happy about the weekend. Y’all are going to be surprised, but we do have plans for the weekend! We are going to the mall to look at the ring I want for our ten-year anniversary. Of course, we will do this in a safe manner by wearing a mask and disinfecting everything! Do y’all have plans for the weekend?
As we say “hello” to the weekend and “goodbye” to the week, we need to try doing what we can to enter the weekend in a positive and happy mindset! I want to take this moment to remind y’all that life is short and we only get one chance to live our life the best we possibly can. There is not a pause or rewind button on life and there are no so overs. I am sharing this quote to serve as a kind wake-up call for this. Once we discover who we are, we need to be the best person we can be. It is also crucial to be satisfied and happy with who we are. Life is not always about making everyone else happy, although that is important, we are not going to be able to make anyone happy if we are not happy with ourselves. I am guilty about being a people pleaser and putting everyone else’s needs and wants above my own, but I am trying to do better about this!
Over this weekend, I will encourage you to do things that bring you joy, but to do so in a safe manner. Unfortunately, we are not out of the woods with the pandemic and there are still too many new cases daily. For reasons I will never understand, people view the news and see the science to back up the dangers of this virus and still refuse to get vaccinated. There are no logical reasons to not get vaccinated because it has been approved by the FDA and it is saving lives! If you have not been vaccinated, I am begging you to do so!! Those that continue refusing to get the vaccine are the problem and they are killing others. The virus and vaccine are not political, but it is a sense of urgency!

I can vividly remember this day eight years ago when the world lost an amazing soul. I remember exactly where I was, who I spoke to and what was said, and what occurred for days, weeks, months, and years later. My husband and I were gearing up for an anniversary trip to Florida and I had just left the tanning salon when I heard a voicemail from my uncle requesting that I call him. Considering I do not typically hear from him because over the years we grew apart, I was instantly concerned and immediately called him back.
The words that left my uncle’s mouth changed my life forever. My uncle was calling to inform me that my grandfather who I idolized had lost his battle with cancer. This news jarred my mind, heart, and soul because I had a deep connection and love for my grandfather. I guess I could say that in my mind, my grandfather could beat anything and would live forever, but that childish thought was proven to be very incorrect.
I always had an incredible amount of admiration for my late grandfather because he had a heart of goal and was extremely thoughtful, loving, fair, considerate, and much more. Much of the way my late grandfather was has been instilled into me, which I am and always will be forever thankful for. I do not think there will ever be a way to be as wonderful as he was, but I will never give up trying.
Unfortunately, I think it is normal for people to disappoint others, but my grandfather never once disappointed me. I could always count on this man because he loved his family so purely and deeply. His core values were inspiring, encouraging, motivating, honest, generous, optimistic, and so much more, which I hope to carry with me until I see him again.
Although my grandfather passed away eight years ago, his spirit will live on within my heart and soul for the rest of my life. I know that he is watching over me and even though I cannot hear his voice, I can feel his presence when I am going through difficult times. He has always been a voice of reason and logic, where is rare in the world today. At the lowest and most difficult times during my life, my grandfather’s voice would ring in my ears, and everything became much easier to handle. He even made being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when I was only 19 years old easier to tolerate.
Every year on my grandfather’s birthday and the day he passed away, I have a difficult time. However, please do not mistake this because I will be forever thankful for the times I had with my grandfather and do feel like his life should be celebrated and I know he would not want me to be sad, but there is still an ache and emptiness in my heart from losing him.
I think I have mentioned this in a previous post, but my grandfather was a writer for his local newspaper and was an amazing pro-golfer. I do not know the first thing about golf but would love to believe I get my love for writing from my grandfather. The only thing that helps me deal with my emotions, positive or negative is to write about them, which is the reason I am writing about my grandfather on the eight-year anniversary of his death. Writing may not always take the sting of the pain away, but it does help me to let everyone reading this post understand how wonderful and amazing my grandfather was. There will never be a day that I am not thankful to have had James Bucky O’Brien for a grandfather because some of my best qualities were derived from him.

Many of us had yesterday off of work for the holiday, so we have a shorter week! I have said this before, but the shorter weeks always feel much longer than the normal 5 day workweek or at least I think they do. What do you think about the shorter weeks, do they feel shorter or longer to you? If you had a long weekend, did you enjoy the three days away from work? I did not do anything special and did not even sleep in, but I think that is because my brain is wired to wake up early everyday. It is rather annoying, but I guess it is what it is!
I was able to do a post yesterday, but it was not the same type I typically do and I hope if you were able to read it, you enjoyed it! We do have four days left of the week before we make it back to the weekend and I found a quote that I wanted to share with y’all. There is something in every experience we go through and often which I think our reactions are even more important than the experience. There are a few awareness in September that I am planning to write about, but over the weekend when I was planning to I had another one of my bad headaches. I keep wondering why I keep getting headaches and one thing that might be causing them is failure to stay hydrated especially with the awful heat. Most of the time I do well with staying hydrated, but if I get too side tracked with other things like work, I do not do nearly as well. Another issue I dealt with over the weekend was a severe lack of sleep, which I have no idea why. It was not like I had to get up early, I just could not sleep. I think everything is important to bring awareness to people, but two of them I know effect many people and need to be shared. Please stay tune and I will be doing these posts soon.
