Coping with Chronic Pain

Sunday-QuoteCoping with chronic pain while still trying to maintain a normal life seems almost impossible at times and even a little frustrating! The beginning of this week was hard for me because I was on my feet way more than I could tolerate. I was truly thankful for the two days off I had, but work on Saturday was absolutely insane!

Currently I work at an apartment community in what should be a low stress position because I am just a leasing consultant. I arrived to work at 10:00 am and at 10:02 I had my first people arrive saying they were supposed to be moving in that day. There was no information anywhere on the other Restartleasing consultant’s desk and the manager keeps his office locked, which makes absolutely NO sense!!I ended up calling my co-worker on his day off, after all this was his lease and should have been handled on Friday. I was not at all surprised that he did not know which apartment the couple was moving into or what they owed. We tried contacting the property manager, who of course did not answer his phone or return the phone call. I ended up having to explain to the couple we would have to postpone their move in date until Monday because I was not able to get any of the information we needed. Thankfully, they did still have their other apartment, so they chaouswould not be forced to get a hotel room for the weekend.

The second person arrived at about 10:30 and this was my lease, so I knew what needed to be done. The gentleman just needed to view the three apartments I had available for his move in date. Consider his move in date was not right away, I was not allowed to hold a normal apartment for him. The three I was able to hold were slightly modified to accommodate a handicap individual, which he is not. Even though I disagreed with this situation, I did this at the direction of my manager! Thankfully he was satisfied with the first one because he wanted to be closer to the front of the community. This was the easiest situation I had to deal with all day!download (4)

Once I got back to the office, after showing the three apartments, there was another person waiting because she was also supposed to be moving in. With no surprise at all there was very limited information on my co-workers desk regarding the move-in, but at least I was able to find what the apartment number was and what the new resident owed. Unfortunately, the important things that were missing were the lease to be signed and keys to the apartment. My guess is the lease was in my manager’s LOCKED office and no one informed maintenance of the correct move-in day. I was able to work around the issues by giving the young lady the ONLY key we had and asking her to come into the office on Monday to sign her lease and get the real keys.

I do not handle things well when simple things do not go well. I remember asking my co-8767492ff9e8b5334f5408fde751e388-thankful-for-grateful-for-300x237worker early in the week to make sure ALL his move-ins were completed, which would have meant walking through the apartment to ensure there were NO issues, the lease was signed and apartment keys were waiting in the file. I gave him several days’ notice to handle things properly and in my opinion how he handled them were unacceptable. I blame him and the manager for how terrible things went yesterday, but I do plan to make some suggestions on Monday morning so this kind of thing NEVER happens again! I do not think this sets a horrible feel for someone moving in to a new apartment when nothing was handled in an appropriate manner!

The entire day was a total disaster and most of the issues could have and should have been images (1)avoided. Another HUGE issue I was dealing with was, phone call after phone call with residents complaining their air conditioner was not working. The maintenance person informed me that the new management company was not allowing them to buy Freon from the vendor they had been using for years, but did not have another vendor lined up. The residents are paying to live these apartment and therefore important things like a working air conditioner when the temperatures are in the high 90’s is a priority and should Work-Quotes-Jim-Collins-in-his-book-Good-To-Great-shares-that-we-need-to-get-the-right-peoplalso be a requirement!

By the end of my day on Saturday, I was not only over-heated, fatigued and in an insane amount of pain, but I was also extremely irritated. It is not fair to force someone to pay for an apartment and then not fix things that break! If I am not mistaken, it is in the lease agreement what each party is responsible for.

It is now Sunday and my last day of the my short weekend before going back to work five days in a row. Unfortunately, even though I am trying to rest, my pain is still rather high. It seems like things have just continued to add up for me and I almost feel like I am trying to walk uphill in quicksand! At this point all I can do is hope this upcoming week will go much better and things will start to ease up.download (4)

  1. AWW bless your heart. I’m sending prayers your way for rest and comfort. I hope that things get better for you. I know that being overheated can make things so tough. The heat seems to bring things to a head much faster than the cooler weather. I hope you find some rest today. I think you are doing wonderfully. It might not feel like it and I know you are a beautiful example of grace under fire! I see that so clearly Alyssa. Much love and a big gentle hug! ❤

    • Thank you so much! Yesterday was a pretty awful day and I broke the promise I made to myself. When I started this job, I promised myself to think of it as just a job and not get too involved. I am not able to do that though because I know how an apartment community should work. Nothing that should be done at that community is getting done and residents are not happy. The heat is really hard for me to get through. I tend to fail at eating and staying hydrated. Your comment really made my day and I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart. I try my best to handle all situations as if I was in the other person’s shoes. You are true blessing Michelle Marie!

      • Aww well you are doing great. Give yourself a break. You can’t change things in one day but this will help you to see where things could be in the future. I think they are lucky to have you. I think you have a good work ethic and truthfully that is a rare things these days. Blessings on the rest of your day and your week. I have a second interview tomorrow so I’ll see how that goes. I’m like you I just don’t want to let a job get to me anymore so I’m careful too! Big hugs xoxo ❤

      • That is so exciting you have a second interview! They will be lucky to have you and should jump at the chance! I wish you the best of luck!
Good work ethic is very rare and too many people do not understand it. I hate missing work, but taking care of my husband took a priority today.

      • You are so sweet. I think I did really well. I’m one of the finalist they said. I felt like it was like Ms America or something and wondered why employers act like they are so mighty and hold all the cards. That was odd to think this. I got nervous because my back started throbbing and the pain nearly took my breath away. First time since my injury it’s done something like this. So I prayed and I’m hope that. So I’ll maybe know something by the end of week. I’m really tired of doing this today I felt this big time. 😀
Well there you go. I agree with you you have to have priorities especially for family that’s for sure! I hope he’s feeling better and that you are too! 🙂 ❤ xo

      • Please forgive me for my delayed response. In my opinion, you should the winner! I am so sorry your back started hurting. I know how much pain can distract us from what we should be focused on, if that makes any sense.
I have always been good at setting priorities and a job will always come far behind my family. I think he is getting better, but my goodness it has been a long 4 days. I hope you hear good news soon because that is what you deserve! I will be sending LOTS of positive vibes your way!

I had a 3rd interview yesterday so I’m hopeful. I’ve never had to even have a 3rd interview. LOL Happy Friday to you. I hope you get to rest this weekend ❤

      • WOW, 3rd interview is pretty darn good! I think they would be foolish to not hire you because you are the best!! I think you will be hearing great news early next week!! I hope you have a fantastic weekend!!!

      • Yay I certainly like hearing that. I think it’s good too. I think I’ve been turned down so much that I’m a little gun shy to it all. Sigh! My mom says well I only need one job so that’s all I need is the one! 🙂 ❤

      • I understand being a little gun shy when you have been let down and disappointed, but it is so important to believe in yourself. I know this will sound a little cliche, but everything happens for a reason and some how life works out for what is best for our own needs! I believe you’ve got the job!!!!

I am so happy for you!!! I knew you would get the job because you are brilliant!!!

      • OH my goodness. That’s so scary. Are you okay now? Alex fell once and hit her head on the tub. That was scary. I hope you are able to work and function. I know how hard it is to work with such a challenge. I think you are amazing! Sending prayers and hugs to you. I hope you get to rest.
Thank you for the compliment! I appreciate you! xxxx ❤

      • Thank you Michelle. I am doing okay, just struggling with headache, neck & back ache and a little confusion. I hope it will get better soon because my word I look a mess! I have taken pictures daily to see how it is healing. My job is going to have to be understanding because I am not going to be at full capacity.
How long did it take for Alex heal? I am so happy that you got the job you wanted. I knew you would because you not only deserved it, but you are amazing!!!

      • Oh yikes that must have been a bad fall. She actually ended up with a concussion so it took about a week before she was feeling better. Interesting how injuries affect the body and everything we do.

Thank you for your kind words. It’s nice to have the encouragement. I hope you get some much needed rest. 🙏🏼💜💕

You are more than welcome! I will always do my best to encourage you!!!!

    • Oh my goodness yesterday was beyond frustrating. I swear I was so irritated I was almost in tears a few times. I had planned to rest today, but I had to go to the grocery store and I am trying to take care of my husband. He has tooth he thinks will need to be pulled. I feel so bad for him because he has been in SO much pain. Hopefully we can get him into a dentist tomorrow and then get referral to an oral surgeon.

  2. Good grief!! It’s terrible that your coworkers and supervisors shoved you into these situations! It sounds as if no one knows or cares what’s going on! Geez, that must’ve been awful. I’ve said it before, but I admire your ability to function at work! You did a great job!!

    • Thank you Meg! Yesterday was pretty terrible, but it will not happen again. Things need to be handled way better than they are and the supervisor that seems to not care anymore, needs to let us type up the leases. These people are childish and really annoying! I hope you are doing well and having a fantastic weekend!

  3. your Saturday totally sucked and i am very sorry about that. it is so frustrating when co-workers don’t do their job and you get stuck cleaning up their mess! with you kind heart, there is no way you could not try to help……….but, it is still unfair. hopefully this week will be better. hope your husband feels better soon!

  4. Unacceptable!!! I wouldn’t offer suggestions, I’d raise hell! I’d let each party know, in no uncertain terms: The next time the co-worker leaves stuff undone, the residents get his cell phone number! The next time I need information from the office and the BOSS doesn’t answer the phone… I will get past the locked door! One way or another. I’d also say this sets me up for looking like a total idiot and I won’t have it! (Don’t say a word about your stress or how it makes you feel.) Drop the damn hammer! If you get fired, and make them fire you, don’t quit, there’s unemployment… there are other jobs! This asinine slacking stops now! I’m really pissed off! My hubby worked maintenance for apartment complexes… I totally know this damn game they are playing, you have to bite back and leave a mark! Or this will not end. If you need me for back up I am on my way!!!

    • Thank you so much for this! I actually decided to not offer any suggestions to them, but the big boss will be here tomorrow. I plan to ask to speak to her one on one for a short time and let her know what is going on. I worked with apartment communities for a long time before and things were never this awful. I think I pissed my boss off today because I did not go to work. I called him this morning to explain the my husband has battled with tooth pain all weekend to the point he has not slept in more than 48 hours. He did not seem happy about that, but my husband comes ahead of any job. The other leasing consultant leaves rent checks and other checks on his desk, which they end up falling on the floor. If he loses a check, it would be his ass! My goodness do I wish you lived closer! I could use someone with as much passion as you to back me up. Thankfully, the assistant manager is pretty frustrated as well, but I don’t know what she is willing to risk. Residents hate the property manager and I can see why. Those that leased with my co-worker have nothing nice to say about him. The lady from the weekend told me he did not communicate with her and she had to be the one to call and email him. Nothing that goes on at this place is right. Not repairing the a/c would have me pretty mad if I lived there. I actually gave a few people to the corporate office. I thought they deserved to talk to someone in charge with what they have dealt with. I didn’t know your hubby worked maintenance at apartment communities. If he worked at this place, he would hate it!

      • Stand your ground! When you meet with the big boss keep it short and professional. You be the professional that the other two need to be. New renters are showing up and co-worker doesn’t have correct paperwork. Boss limits access to office, that’s were additional paperwork is kept, and doesn’t answer the phone to assist me. Unacceptable and unprofessional, needs to stop. Steps need to be taken to correct this. Oh, yes, I’d back you! I don’t play!!! Man, gets me hot just thinking about it. Freon? That has been illegal to use since I was a director back in 1998! We had to replace all items that used Freon! Good to have them call corporate, ridiculous! You are in my thoughts… yeah, if my hubs worked there, the other two would be chewed up and spit out! Man, I’m frustrated for you. I have no patience for people who do not do their darn jobs! (Sorry.) Good luck with the big boss! You got this!

  5. The level of incompetence in the business world continues to astound me. It is almost to the point where it is a shock if everything happens the way it is supposed to. It’s a sad commentary when a person is grateful for experiencing what they should expect to experience . If I were those folks who could get into the apartment because of your manager’s incompetence, I would look elsewhere if the lease had not been signed

    • It really is sad that when something in the business world goes well, we feel the need to praise someone. Even at fast food places, when the order is right, we are always shocked. I think most people are completely and totally incompetence and never face any consequences. I mean hell we all see what the leader of the country does or doesn’t do, people just think it is okay now! I said this a million times by now, if I was leasing an apartment at this community and this stuff happened, I will say screw it and find someone where else to live. If I did live there and maintenance wasn’t able to fix my ac when temps are in the 90’s, I will leave!

  6. Eugh, what a crappy week. I hate it when these sorts of things happen that you know could, and should, have been avoided. It’s no wonder you’re extra shattered and rather ‘meh’. I really do hope this week goes more smoothly!!

  7. Wow, your weekend sounds like it was more than challenging. It also sounds like you handled things well. I can feel your frustration but you did your very best to assist all your customers. You’re so right, air conditioning in times of extreme heat is a priority. Sounds like your prior skills as a leasing consultant will help you impact this community in a positive way. I know you can do it. Just remember to take care of yourself in the midst of all the chaos. All my Love & Support, Mom!

    • Thank you so much! I am one that literally stresses about everything and find it near impossible to change. The stress at work only lasts a few hours, but other stress lingers forever it seems. Stressing about work is never good and it doesn’t change the outcomes, all it does is bring us down.

      • I agree with you Alyssa – we got busy at work and I have had some issues here at the house and with myself and the weather as well. I am behind here on Reader and dodging storms (or threats of storms) daily.
I hope your never-ending heat and humidity has gone bye-bye – we have a three-day reprieve then back to the sauna on Monday at 91 degrees. It takes a lot out of you. The grass is already yellow despite days and days of torrential rain.

      • It was horribly hot lasdt week and this upcoming week as well – today was supposedly a “break” and cooler weather – that cooler weather was 82 degrees and that is not cool in my opinion. I went to a butterfly garden open house today – very beautiful day for it – but just two butterflies for goodness sake.

  8. Hi Alyssa, I love your positivity! My name is Amy, on the 14th September 2013 an event happened that changed my life forever. I was left with a traumatic brain injury and a severe brachical plexus injury. This is one of the pieces I wrote, I’ve actually done a few on my accident/injuries.

I am looking forward to reading your posts and getting to know you. Dealing with a TBI isn’t easy, so I can understand going through dark times. The important thing is, you are now trying to be positive and it is working for you!!!
