I hope y’all have a lovely Monday! First day of a new week may bring some wonderful and positive changes to all of our lives! I really appreciate y’all visiting my site today and as always love to read your comments, which I do respond to as quickly as I can! Most of the time I like to write about the random things that are on my mind. This helps me to release all those emotions and then getting your feedback help tremendously, so thank you for all of your fantastic comments!
How do you fight for your health instead of fight against it? It is so important to be vocal with your doctor and never allow them to dismiss what you say or rush you out of the exam room. We all know our bodies and how we are feeling better than anyone, so that should be listened to. I think at times it is hard to admit what our body is telling us and our body feels as though it has to scream it at us, which may cause additional issues. I am one that will ignore issues that arise for as long as possible because I do not want to admit to the problems. Ignoring or neglecting our health will never result in anything beneficial. This is where fighting for our health becomes extremely important. If we ignore what our body is telling us we are actually fighting against our own health.
I am actually going to my MS Specialist on Thursday. I am going to my specialist partially because I am supposed to see her every 6 months and partially because I want to share with her my concerns. I already know going in that my issues with headaches will be dismissed because she seems to think that MS and headaches have no correlation, but I think it is still important to bring the topic up once again. I also want to discuss with her the fact that the issues that came with my relapse in October have not really gone away. I am fully aware that the body heals from each relapse differently, but I should have improved drastically by now and not continue to have pain that affects my ability to work full-time. I just really need answers to why I seem to be at a stand still in health. Do y’all have any suggestions to how to grab this doctor’s attention?
I hope y’all have a great and relaxing evening! As always I am sending y’all lots of love and comfort! Try to hold onto your positive thoughts because they will help in the long run and negative thoughts will only hold you back.
Always, Alyssa

Have you looked at the Gilenya website? It lists headaches as a side effect. I know that’s not what you asked, but I would start there with you doctor. Also if he/she thinks headaches are not ms related, it doesn’t change the fact that you are having them. Maybe start looking at another ms drug? or ask the doctor for something for the headaches…..grrr big pharma need another drug to fight the side effects from the first one

I have been on the Gilenya website and do know headaches are a side effect, but even off the Gilenya I had horrible headaches. But off the Gilenya I had the most terrible flare up I have ever had. I will talk to my doctor on Thursday though. Thank you Grace!!!

Thank you Grace! I agree we should not have to fight with the doctor in order to take care of our health, but I guess we just do what we have to do! I hope you are having a good week. Hugs

Hope you have a productive appointment this week. I know I definitely tend to avoid symptoms at times and it is in part because I never know if it is just a normal part of my illness progression or not. I usually say to myself, “Just wait a little while and see if things clear up on their own or get worse, then go see a doctor.” Not the greatest strategy but I too feel like any new symptoms will probably just get dismissed as an “oh well that’s just another weird fibro thing, deal with it.” I’m hoping to get better about it this year.

Thank you so much, I hope so too! Sometimes it is easier to ignore symptoms because they are pretty scary. I normally try to wait out the symptoms because I hate going to the doctor’s office and hate hearing what they say. I am hoping for a better year as well! I really appreciate your comment and hope your evening was a pleasant one!!

I’m always finding more and more ways in which we are similar! I, too, hold off on saying anything about new symptoms because I just don’t want to deal with them. For me, it’s also a matter of (stupidly) not wanting to look weaker than I already do. So I hold it in to my own demise, because symptoms generally have a bigger cause and ignoring them doesn’t make them go away.
Is the doctor you’re seeing nice or are they just a know-it-all? I would suggest telling her exactly what’s going on and to not back down if she begins to rush you or blow off your symptoms. As you said, you know your body better than anyone and something obviously isn’t right. Tell her it’s affecting your job and costing you money and you are desperate to find out what’s wrong. Hopefully she will listen.
Good luck, I hope it all goes well! ❤

It is amazing how much alike we are! I really use to think if I ignored the symptoms they would just disappear. It is frustrating when they don’t!
I only see this doctor because my choices are very slim. Hopefully I will be able to find one I trust more once we more. She is definitely a know-it-all that really knows nothing! I will try to approach her the way you have suggested and hopefully it will work this time, but if not I will have new doctor soon that hopefully has a little more knowledge!
Thank you for your advice! I hope your week is going well!!!

I would tell her the headache and pain are interfering with your quality of life. That should grab her attention. They like to throw that term around I’m sure it will if anything surprise her to have you use that term in regards to how this pain is effecting you.

I will give that a try. Hopefully something will get this doctors attention. Thankfully she will not be my doctor much longer because we are moving! I am in the process of finding a new doctor in the city we are moving to. I hope you are feeling well Alex!!

Hoping you find a more attentive neuro. I know how frustrating it all is.

Thank you, I certainly hope I can to. I did have two amazing neuros before but unfortunately they retired! I just need one that is intelligent and not a wanna be know-it-all. I am sure they are out there. I actually want one that is a middle aged man that is compassionate. The 2 neuros that were fantastic were older men with a true heart, but then they retire:(

I still can’t get over your doctor’s opinion about headaches! And I’m sad to hear you’re still in pain from your last relapse. I hope your appointment goes well. I’ll keep you in my prayers. I wanted you to know my baby tulips survived the snow which has since melted and there’s no snow in the forecast for the next week.

Thank you Hannah! I have a pretty strong mind and tend to not let things go easily. I will make sure I get this doctor to hear what I am saying before the appointment is over. I appreciate your comment and support. I will definitely keep everyone updated!! I hope you are having a good week so far!!!

I don’t know about getting their attention, but if you think your neurologist doesn’t listen or take your concerns seriously I would look for a new one, especially if they don’t specialize in MS. Hopefully, that isn’t too difficult in your location or with your insurance plan.

I am actually in the process of finding a new one because my husband and I are moving. I hope that I will find a doctor that listens to what I am saying because I do know how I am feeling! Thank you so much for your comment!

This is such good timing because I was planning of re-writing and adding to an older post I did ages ago on making the most of a doctor’s appointment ( http://invisiblyme.com/2016/10/12/make-it-count-6-tips-for-your-next-gp-appointment/ ) It can be so hard to get your points across, especially when you have more than one thing to discuss. What I try to do now is focus on the prep – get my list together, work out what to tackle first, and try to keep things as concise as possible. Remember that you know your body better than anyone and you deserve to be listened to. Wishing you all the very best for Thursday!! xx

Search the Internet for MS+headaches. Keep drilling down, if an article is close click it to see if the have other suggestion. I would look on Wikipedia and the FDA, on FDA just start your search blind ten search your medicine. The best details is go to drug section, search your medicine name and any other drugs, one at a time. The FDA site is very helpful. When your drug come up click and look for Information for patient. That is. the official from the manufacture and all the info does not make to the shorted data we get. Focus on side-effects. It sounds long but it isn’t. You’ll get the best info from FDA. Everything you find that mentions headaches print off. Then doctors know your serious and have done you home work.
Go luck with appt.

The crazy thing is, I have gone into the specialist before with printed information about MS and headaches and she still dismisses it. I do not give in easily though. I will go to the FDA website though. I do know that the Gilenya can cause headaches as it shows on the manufactures website. But the doctor still dismisses everything I say. Honestly I think I would rather deal with headaches that further disability. My poor mind is a little confused, but I will be prepared for the appt tomorrow. I am not leaving without answers! I appreciate your comment!!!

Ask her why she dismisses you. Then start your calm argument and say we agree to disagree. Also mention you could go to a GP Doctor and they would give you something for headaches. Tell the GP you’re not here to talk MS. Describe the issue and you looking for headaches. Nothing form stoping. You need a GP for all the other items that pop up. Don’t give up. M
