Good morning Y’all! Today I am not giving thanks just because it is “Thanksgiving”, I am giving thanks because there are so many things and people I am thankful for everyday of my life. Like I said yesterday, I do not need a designated day that some countries only acknowledge thanks once a year for, I am thankful everyday for my life. I do understand that there are actually many countries that do not celebrate Thanksgiving and I do appreciate that, but they love their family just as much if not more than we do here in the United States.
This morning I was very curious on how Thanksgiving really started and what I read and watched was a bit disturbing. There were numerous Native Americans asked how they feel about Thanksgiving and their responses were upsetting because I never realized how cruel things were back when this holiday was introduced. I am going to attached the article I read online and y’all view more than what I talk about, http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/thanksgiving-2017-native-americans-videos-what-do-they-think-racism-columbus-redskins-a8070611.html . Many of the Native Americans that were asked about Thanksgiving believe it was simply a massacre. Puritans came and slaughtered millions of Native Americans, stole their traditional land and damned their rivers. Many believed that Christopher Columbus was the first terrorist in America. These people believe that now Thanksgiving is just a reason to have family together and over eat. Of course then after a massive meal, everyone wants to start shopping and spending insane amounts of money for Christmas gifts. Anyone that lives in the United States knows that the stores will be exceedingly busy from now until January with a tremendous amount of consumerism. I mean for God’s sakes there are stores that are opening in the early afternoon of Thanksgiving Day with early bird savings. What happened to enjoying time with loved ones? I do not mean to sound so negative about a holiday that is meant to be surrounded by family, but it is quite upsetting to think about how this “holiday” really started in 1619.
I am eternally thankful for my family that is still here with us and those that have passed on. I was truly blessed to have had my wonderful Grandfather in my life and my husband’s amazing Grandparents for so many years! My Grandfather and my husband’s Grandparents made such a positive impact on my life! They were by all means the most loving, accepting, compassionate and all around truly amazing people who ever walked the face of this earth. It makes me sad that they are no longer with us in the physical sense, but they will always be a strong part of our heart!
After reading the article and watching the videos that I shared with you, I really do not know how I feel about Thanksgiving. I do not like to hear of anyone being mistreated because I feel like anyone and everyone must be treated with love and respect. Let me ask you, how do you feel about Thanksgiving and how do you celebrate it? I will love my family daily until my last breath and I will always enjoy any precious time I am able to spend with them! My heart breaks to know that even almost 400 years ago there were so many people being treated unfairly and it still goes on today in 2017. It makes me sad to know there are so many people who are not fortunate enough to have food on the table but then there are so many others that will spend a small fortune on shopping. What would happen if all those that spend so much money shopping the “greatest deals” around the holidays, would spend even a fraction of that to that to help those in need?
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts for the day. Again, I was not meaning to be negative I just like to know as much as I can about our holidays and what we are celebrating for. I truly hope that you enjoy whatever you are doing on this beautiful day! Please leave any comments you have for what I have written today and I will respond as quickly as I can. No matter what the day is, please enjoy your life as much as you possibly can and never forget to share love with those you hold dear before you miss that opportunity!
Always, Alyssa

We don’t celebrate thanksgiving here in the U.K. but I used to when I lived in Canada as a child – I mainly remember the food! But I completely agree that we should be thankful everyday for all the special people in our lives not just on one special day when historically the events that lead to it hurt so many. Wishing you all the best xx

I never realized how many people were hurt or killed back then. It was really shocking to me and I assume not many other knew that either. All people think about is the food and probably football. It is crazy! I hope you have a lovely restful day!!!

Oh goodness it really wasn’t a good read! My husband had told me about some of it before but I did not pay him much attention. But the history really is terrible! I hope you have a wonderful relaxing day!!!

We don’t do Thanksgiving in Australia, but we have a similar issue with one of our holidays, Australia Day. It’s the day the first fleet arrived, and it’s known as ‘Invasion Day’ to many indigenous people. I feel very uncomfortable celebrating it. There’s an increased push to change the date of our national holiday to something more inclusive (e.g., the day we officially became a unified country rather than just a prison outpost), but a good potion of Australians are against that, which is sad to see.

I guess most countries have something that is unsettling when it involves holidays, All I have ever wanted was for everyone to get along and treat everyone with love and respect. Sadly, I do not think that is ever going to happen, at least not in my lifetime. Things in the US have been going down hill rapidly and I do not think me alone can change it. But, I can just continue to be kind and accepting of others!!!

I think things can change, and for the better, it just takes time and people willing to go the distance. I’m not sure things will ever be perfect, but they can keep getting better. But the US situation is very disheartening–even on the other side of the world it is disheartening.

I do believe things can change for the better but people need to try! It is sad how bad things have gotten over here but it has to get better sooner or later! I just wish there could be more love and less hatred!!

I’ve never been a fan of Thanksgiving. The history behind it makes it even worse but I do spend time with my family. Not a big Black Friday fan either. I never have money at that the time, plus it’s just too crazy & hectic. People are nuts! I worked at Walmart for three years and worked every Black Friday. JEEEESUS

I am glad I am not the only one that has not been a fan of Thanksgiving. It was only recent I found out how violent it started and that just is not something I can celebrate. I will of course spend time with family but today my husband and I stayed home and I made lasagna, That is really the only thing I am good at making! We will be going to my in-laws tomorrow but not for a big dinner. I have never and never will go out on Black Friday. I do not like crowds and people from what I have heard are pushy! I worked at Walmart all through high school and it was always crazy. Of course I was always the one to do layaway before Christmas and the Service Desk after Christmas, I was fast and liked to stay busy. But all other times I was a cashier.

They can be downright nasty on Black Friday! I worked the service desk a lot, as well.

I honestly might have a small problem with online shopping! It is so easy to find things you think you need online and so easy to click buy! I hate going to the mall so when I need clothes, I just do it all online!!

I’ve started shopping online more & more. First, I moved back to my hometown which has nothing but two dollar stores, a grocery store, & Shopko. So, nothing. Lol. It started with Wish, then Barnes & Noble. I think I’m going to end up doing all my Xmas shopping online! It’s kind of addicting & you’re right, way too easy!

It is so addictive and easier than going to the store! People are always so focused on what they are shopping for and just so rude! Have lots of fun shopping! Oh always google promo codes for whatever store you are shopping, you might find additional discounts!!!

Ooh, thank you for that tip! I think that is probably the best benefit, is being around rude people less or just hoards of shoppers in general.

You are so welcome! I promise you can normally find promo codes! I love shopping but only online!

A little-known story about our Puritanical history is that Puritans viewed Indians as a lost tribe of Israel–therefore the connotation “Tribe.” Puritans persecuted the Indians as Jews.
